GOP memo says issue offers political rewards

WASHINGTON — Republican leaders believe their attention to the Terri Schiavo issue could pay dividends with Christian conservatives whose support they covet in the 2006 midterm elections, according to a GOP memo intended to be seen only by senators.

The one-page memo, distributed to Republican senators by party leaders, called the debate over Schiavo legislation "a great political issue" that would appeal to the party's base, or core, supporters. The memo singled out Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who is up for re-election next year.

"This is an important moral issue, and the pro-life base will be excited that the Senate is debating this important issue," said the memo, reported by ABC News and later given to The Washington Post. "This is a great political issue, because Senator Nelson of Florida has already refused to become a co-sponsor and this is a tough issue for Democrats."

I agree. My brother could do whatever he wanted to do except eat normally. So a feeding tube is not the same thing as life support. Thats just crazy!.

It's simple. If the GOP does take any action, they will be demonized, if they take no action, they will be demonized. Everyone should know this by now. This "policy" does NOT apply to RATS! Do not use!!

Do you consider a spouse who has two children with another woman to be acting in her best interests?

Doctors asked me if they should stop feeding my mother when she was in a coma. FOUR DAYS LATER she was recovered and discharged from the hospital.

The Democrats and their legacy media amen corner chorus think its all about politics. They will NEVER get it. The politically expedient thing to do in this case was NOTHING. Polls after all, show a majority Americans want Terri Schiavo dead. Fighting for what's right and standing your ground on the proposition our rights come from God is a hard sell these days. Then again, what do Democrats know about ethics? They were grandstanding in the House just to steal what little time Terri has left. Now tell me who's playing politics here.

Really? Name them WaPo.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out the author was actually a dem ala the Maryland freeper caper or "hate crimes" that turn out to have actually been perpetrated by the "victim".

I swear, I can't believe a Republican would be stupid to put something this obvious yet would have political repercussions if found out on paper. Maybe they should start encrypting their memos.

Maybe you should reconsider the premise of the story.

"An unattributed unsigned memo from an unnamed source. Sounds like an airtight case to me."

Doesn't happen to be Arial, 12 pitch, proportional font does it? Somebody get their IBM Composer out over the weekend?

Looks to me like they are calling to represent the majority of those who elected them to office. Whats the big deal even if the memo is real?

Rush was talking about this memo and said he found it unusual - in that it HAD NO MARKINGS ON IT - and he also wondered WHY ..??

In all the "formal" memos I've seen from the House or Senate - there are logos to indicate where the memo came from. If this is another "Dan Rather" project I'm going to predict ABC has finally sung it swan song.

The timing of this memo is suspicious.

It's not important what the memo says, I want an investigation into how they got the memo.

yada yada yada.
