It's really hard to negate the findings of studies or the risks associated with obesity based on anecdotal evidence relating to just your two grandmothers.

However, the formula most people use compares height to weight, and doesn't differentiate between fat and muscle. Therefore, someone who is a world class athlete could conceivably be classified as obese.
