Spectators dispute police claims that Island scuffle was “small” (Univ. Texas vs A&M?)

Five people were taken to local hospitals for injuries

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, March 16, 2005 — A large, shapeless mound of sand was all that was left Tuesday evening from a sand sculpture of Jesus that might have been the cause of a large beach disturbance.

Although the cause of a beach brawl reportedly involving hundreds of Spring Breakers remained in dispute Tuesday night, police said five people were taken to local hospitals for injuries they had received.

Another six people were treated and released at the scene.

South Padre Island Police Chief Robert Rodriguez said the disturbance started shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when an unknown individual walked over a large sand sculpture of Jesus on the beach behind the Radisson Hotel at the foot of the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway.

The police chief said the disturbance was small and only limited to a few people, but witnesses described it as much larger.

Several witnesses told The Brownsville Herald the brawl involved hundreds of Spring Breakers who threw bottles at each other.

Some witnesses said the brawl was started by people who intentionally walked on the Jesus sand sculpture, but others said the work of art was a casualty of the violence.

“It just made it worse,” said a Texas A&M student about the destruction of the sand sculpture.

Other witnesses said the disturbance was caused between students acting out rivalries between their schools.

“It started out as your basic college chant and turned into a large amorphous mass,” said one University of Texas student who witnessed the brawl. “They were throwing chairs, ice chests and bottles.”

Rodriguez said as many 10 officers from his and other agencies responded to the scene and brought the scene under control in a few minutes time.

But the UT student said police stayed at the perimeter of the disturbance.

“When there’s 3,000 people causing trouble, 10 cops won’t make a difference,” he said.

Rodriguez could not confirm if any of the bottles thrown were made from glass, but said they are prohibited on the beach.

“Look at this,” said one Texas A&M student as he pointed to a cut on his chest. “A glass bottle did it.”

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Put a bunch of Aggies and teasips together, add alcohol, probably some drugs, lots of hormones, and a fight is inevitable.

I guess I just never understood the attraction of South Padre but I guess not being the typical "party hardy" college student the appeal was beyond my grasp.

I do not believe it is a stretch to say that these type of people in another time would have also been the ones to willingly carry out the "final solution" on the Jews during the holocaust. These types of events, although seemingly small and insignificant, are precursors to larger events to follow - kristallnacht was made possible by earlier similar type events. A deep hatred of religion and persons of faith is growing within the country, and is being ignored by too many.

I wonder if the police actually cared to ascertin the truth, as if it was a deliberate act, then why would it not constitute a "hate-crime". Sauce for the goose....

I wonder how differently this would have been handled if it was a black person on the beach and the sculpture was of Malcom X or MLK and a bunch of white kids trampled on it?

One night I had a wondrous dream,
One set of footprints there was seen,
The footprints of my precious Lord,
But mine were not along the shore.

But then some strange prints appeared,
And I asked the Lord, "What have we here?"
Those prints are large and round and neat,
"But Lord, they are too big for feet."

"My child," He said in somber tones,
"For miles I carried you along.
I challenged you to walk in faith,
But you refused and made me wait."

"You disobeyed, you would not grow,
The walk of faith, you would not know,
So I got tired, I got fed up,
And there I dropped you on your butt."

Boy, the Austin UnAmerican certainly tried hard not to give any coherent details of this fight. The tea-sips must have lost the fight BAD.

Somebody had the "Jesus" sand sculpture.

Somebody got beer courage and decided it would be funny, cool, macho or just wanted to rumble and shot his mouth off as he stomped across the sculpture.

Somebody took offense...

Words exchanged... more beer....girls looking on.....can't act like a wussy....

Duke city... time to rumble.

I figure it probably should have been Baylor, SMU, TCU against t.u. and A&M.. hahahahahahahaha... it's a Christian thang..ya'll wouldn't understand.

My guess is that it was getting boring so a fight broke out.

FWIW, they had this story on our local OCK news but the kids they interviewed said it was a UT-OU fight. Guess they're too drunk to deal with the NCAA brackets so they just reverted to football season.
