She wants to know why Homeland Security has not used money to help prevent textile smuggling.
Charlotte, NC -- Members of North Carolina's congressional delegation are demanding answers from the Homeland Security Department about why money appropriated by Congress to fight textile smuggling has not been used to hire new customs inspectors.
"It is my understanding from reports by the textile industry that not one single new agent has been hired as a result of these actions," Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., said in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.
Rep. Robin Hayes, R-N.C., wrote a letter in December and again this month asking about new agents.
"I have yet to see any evidence that U.S. Customs is following through and hiring these agents to catch illegal transshipments and protect our workers and businesses," Hayes said in his letter.
"Textile transshipments have caused the loss of thousands of North Carolina jobs. The fact that we can't get a straight answer on this issue will only make it more difficult for CAFTA or any other future agreement to pass Congress."
Dole and Hayes said $9.5 million to hire 72 new agents have been included in the last two Homeland Security budgets. Their letters were released Tuesday.

Please tell me this is from scrappleface. It's too stupid to be real.
Hey, c'mon. You know DHS kept a dangerous Canadian jockey out the country recently. You expect them to be able to do both?

No mention of cigarettes smuggled out to NY, though. That's a plus for NC.
