"Where's the Governor?" (Gov. Mike Huckabee profiled in April 2005 issue of Runner's World Magazine)

How He Did It In June 2003, Governor Mike Huckabee sought help from Philip Kern, M.D., director of the Weight Control Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. On a sensible diet and exercise plan, Huckabee went from 280 to 175 pounds. He shares his success story in his new book, Quit Digging Your Grave With a Knife and Fork, due out in May 2005.

Calories In Huckabee's Diet

The Old Way: Huckabee ate 3,000 calories or more per day. Staples included barbeque, pork, deep-fried vegetables and lots of pie.

The New Way: Huckabee took in only 800 calories per day - a fortified meal-replacement shake and unlimited vegatables. After three months, he ate a balanced diet of complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and a little "good" fat - totaling 1,600 calories per day.

Today: Huckabee eats 2,500 to 3,000 calories a day. He avoids processed food, sugary drinks, and foods made with white flour, and eats lean meats, fruit, and salads dressed with salsa. Barbeque is still an occasional treat.

Calories Out Huckabee's Exercise

The Old Way: "Before I started exercising, I could barely walk a city block," Huckabee says. Walking up two flights of stairs to the statehouse left him gasping.

During: After he dropped 40 pounds, the governor started walking. He gradually added running, and withiin four months could run continuously up to four miles. In July 2004, he ran a 5-K in 28:39. "I felt like I had won the Boston Marathon," he says.

Today: Huckabee runs four to five miles most days at 4:30am. He followed the Little Rock Marathon Training Plan - which included several long runs - to prepare for the March 6 race.

Note: I had to manually type this because Runner's World doesn't post an on-line version of their magazine. The URL I referenced is from a Governor Mike Huckabee short news item on their web site.

From the Arkansas Governor's website:

Gov. Mike Huckabee finished the Little Rock Marathon on Sunday in four hours, 38 minutes and 59 seconds.

"Crossing that finish line was an incredible accomplishment," the governor said. Huckabee finished before his running mate, Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack. First lady Janet Huckabee walked the marathon and Iowa first lady Christie Vilsack walked part of it.

Looks good...but those three months of 800 calories per day couldn't have been healthy for him despite the weight loss. Those numbers are comparable to what the peasants are getting in North Korea now.

I wish I had a way to scan the before (July 2002) and after (Today) photos of Gov. Huckabee from the Runner's World article. They are truly amazing!

Thanks!

What the photos show is a man who is no longer a walking healthcare crisis waiting to happen. We could close down hospitals all across this country if many of our fellow Americans would follow Governor Huckabee's inspiring example.

Wow! The contrast in the before and after is just amazing!

Here in Colorado I work with training groups preparing to run the Bolder Boulder 10K on Memorial Day each year. In preparing for the 2003 race we had one woman who started out in Dec. 2002 at just over 220 lbs. By race day she was down to just under 140lbs and feeling great! It's awe-inspiring to observe someone transform themselves in this way. This particluar woman worked for the Foreign Service and came back to Boulder to run in 2004. She inspired her husband to do the same and he dropped over 40 pounds. This couple now looks like a pair of tri-athletes.

Wow! In the before picture, he looks like a tub of goo. The after picture makes him resemble that fairly slim GOP guy, Ed Gillespie. Quite an accomplishment for Gov. Huckabee.

So is he "running" for president?

Mike Huckabee is a wonderful person. It is OK with me if he wants to run for president or if he doesn't he can come be our pastor in Memphis at Bellvue Baptist.

He is getting ready to run for President. He has lost weight and gained it back more than once. He usually loses weight when he is getting ready for to run for election.

After the DUMB move he made over ILLEGAL aliens in Arkansas, I would NEVER vote for him again. I was one of his biggest supporters too.

Today: Huckabee runs four to five miles most days at 4:30am.

Unlike a certain former governor who used to meet his babes while allegedly out running.

Plus, it is a lot easier to lose weight when you have people to cook for you, plan your diet, one-on-one with experts in this field, etc....Don't get me wrong, I admire and applaud him for his example but we must not forget the facts.

That's how you get your body to burn muscle, not fat. Your body will go into starvation mode on a diet of only 800 calories a day; it will fight to keep as much fat on your body and will use anything else, mostly muscle to, to provide energy. When you stop a diet like that, you wind up being a fat weak person(obviously if it persists long enough, fat will be burned too, but the concentration camp look isn't exactly healthy) And your metabolism will now be lower because you have less muscle to burn off calories. It is the worst possible way to lose weight.
Reading the article it seems he chnaged his diet and now has a very sensible, balanced diet.

Pure hogwash. The body stores fat to use during times of low energy intake and preferentially uses it for fuel during those times (along with a little muscle if protein needs aren't being met). Myths and wive's tales can't change human physiology.

The Governor's weight lost story, was on Discovery Health Channel last night. The program was the 8 week American Weight lost challenge. Some amazing stories of strong willed people. Good for them.

I hope he becomes your Pastor.

There's more to being President of this country than the ability to lose weight.

Putting a lid on the Illegal Immigration is not up our Governor's alley. He loves them.
