It began as an argument between a husband and a wife, bickering over a growing pile of trash.
By the time it was over, Kamal Lal, 43, was lying on the shoulder of Interstate 101 in Belmont, shot dead by two California Highway Patrol officers who had pursued him in a high-speed chase up and down the freeway Sunday.
Lal's wife, Shelly Lal, was in shock Monday, trying to grasp how her first-ever 911 call to police over a domestic violence incident ended with the death of her husband of 16 years.
"Everyone has their problems, but where this went, it totally doesn't make sense," said Lal, 37, of her husband. "I'm just mad that he was killed in such a barbaric way."
Lal said she and her husband argued at their South San Francisco home Sunday when she told him to remove a pile of trash at the side of their house that was growing and attracting rodents. The argument escalated to the point where Kamal Lal punched her, she said.
Shortly after 1 p.m., she called 911 three times, and each time her husband hung up the phone. With police on their way to the home, Kamal Lal took the keys to his Toyota truck and drove off. Shelly Lal thought that would be the end of it.
Police arrived, however, and Shelly Lal said she told them that she had been struck by her husband. She gave police a description of her husband's truck and she agreed to go with them to the police department to cooperate further.
South San Francisco police officers soon spotted Kamal Lal driving city streets and, when he refused to pull over, they chased him onto Highway 101, where CHP officers took over the pursuit.

Never bring a rock to a gun fight.
This whole incident could have been avoided with the help of a Swiss hygiene inspector.
Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuerher!
Run from police because you commit a crime and bad things can happen to you.
How many people did he almost kill driving down the freeway at 100 mph?
Call 911 and die. Only get the police involved if you are ready to have the perp killed.
Moral: Don't call the police because they are NOT your friends. When a dispute arises between "trying to help" and "enforcing the law," they will enforce the law.
Almost kill? None.
Seems like the CHP might be getting a bit trigger happy. Any of us peons are supposed to retreat until not other option is available.
On the surface it does look pretty suspicious but I was not there so it is up to the investigators.
Maybe if they had not been acting like immature adults this would not have happened.
we can put a man on the moon,
ya think someone could come up with an electronic device that the police could aim at the vehicle they are chasing that would disable the electrical and cause it to come to a stop!
I don't understand this trend lately..."Wah, my (insert relative) got killed when they ran from the Police." People...the Police is the authority figure. You obey them when they tell you to stop your vehicle, get down on the ground, put your hands behind your back, etc. It is not a suggestion, it is an order. If you don't comply you are risking being shot.
Friggin morons.
Another senseless police killing.... this guy was wanted for a minor crime... easily could have been picked up the next day or the day after when tempers had cooled but the police put the lives of innocent bystanders and themselves on the line just so they could chase this petty criminal.
High speed chases that don't involve the pursuit of a suspect wanted for a capital type offense should be outlawed. It's all too often the spark that leads to either innocent people being killed or a Cop being killed.
I remember seeing a show about the police testing devices like that. But, there was always another side to the device, that could cause harm to bystanders.
Her husband was a suspect in a crime committed against her. When she called the police, she asked them to intervene in a situation the couple couldn't control any longer. There is a huge difference between a couple having an argument and a couple using physical force against one another.
Certain frequencies and strengths of microwaves can do this by disrupting the car's electronics, but can also reach levels that can potentially harm the driver or bystanders, plus the range isn't very far.
Of course it would hurt the driver lot's less than .40 S&W rounds.
Well, now she'll have to clean up the trash herself...
