NEW YORK (AP) - Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather's predecessor at the "CBS Evening News," said Monday that Rather's replacement by Bob Schieffer was overdue.

Rather, 73, ends his run as evening news anchor Wednesday, exactly 24 years after replacing Cronkite. Schieffer, the "Face the Nation" host, will be a temporary fill-in until CBS decides on a permanent replacement.

Cronkite called Schieffer "one of the great television journalists of our time."

"Although Dan did a fine job, I would have liked to have seen (Schieffer) there a long time ago," Cronkite said during an interview on CNN. "He would have given the others a real run for their money."

Cronkite said it was a tribute to Rather that he held on so long.

Didn't Rather basically push Cronkite out? It's not surprising that there would be no love lost between them.

And both of them should have been sent to Cuba, since they love Socialism so much.

Why can't Cronkite just STFU?

It's hard to tell if Dan stepped or fell down.

Do we really care what the man who lied about TET thinks about the man who lied about "W"?

I would LOVE to see a mass deportation of the ultra left to the nearest socialist utopia. They would be quick to cry uncle!!!

Why shut him up? This is what whack job liberals do to each other for sport - maim each other in the court of public opinion.

Yeah, I know. But they are both so OVER. I'd rather they just STFU. I just can't stand to hear Cronkite's blubbering.

But Walter's diss does somehow remind me of Pedro Martinez slamming the Sox the very day he signs with the Mets.

Back in 1987 when Rather walked off the set on the air to protest CBS preempting the Evening News for a tennis match, Cronkite said that Rather should have been fired.

Rather was always jealous of Dan. Rather had buyers remose about the timing of his departure. Too late he realized he could have stayed on and continued is own bias for more years.

If Rather has any integrity left he would have spoken up sooner, but as long as nobody caught the lies Rather was happy to be quiet about the CBS lies.

Yes, apparently Dan got rid of Walter once Dan took over. Walter was going to stick around and host little stuff, but Dan said no. That may account for this.

I almost feel sorry for Dan. The pile-on effect is in full force!
