Cronkite Praises Rather's Replacement

NEW YORK (AP) - Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather's predecessor at the "CBS Evening News," said Monday that Rather's replacement by Bob Schieffer was overdue.

Rather, 73, ends his run as evening news anchor Wednesday, exactly 24 years after replacing Cronkite. Schieffer, the "Face the Nation" host, will be a temporary fill-in until CBS decides on a permanent replacement.

Cronkite called Schieffer "one of the great television journalists of our time."

"Although Dan did a fine job, I would have liked to have seen (Schieffer) there a long time ago," Cronkite said during an interview on CNN. "He would have given the others a real run for their money."

Cronkite said it was a tribute to Rather that he held on so long.

"It surprised quite a few people at CBS and elsewhere that, without being able to pull up the ratings beyond third in a three-man field, that they tolerated his being there for so long," he told CNN.

But Cronkite did not heavily fault Rather for his role in last September's discredited story about President Bush's military service. Rather anchored the "60 Minutes Wednesday" story.

"We all know he made a mistake by now," Cronkite said. "But would we have done much the same? I would not be sure that I wouldn't have followed my producers and accepted what they had to offer."

"We all know he made a mistake by now," Cronkite said.

I don't doubt Walter would have done the same thing either.

He is just as big a scumbag as Rather.

The old coot brigade is really piling on ole Dan. I bet it stings. The beauty of it is that they also look bad doing it.

I think Cronkite was even more a lefty than blather. He just didn't have the new media to slap him around.

Yep, it's kind of like the Iran-Iraq war. No good guys, just bad guys killing each other. A win-win all the way around. It does show, however, just how disliked Rather really is, even among his fellow lying CBS news punks.

"Actually, Walter, he broke the law!"

And pretty much got away with the bulk of it.

And thank God that creepy old liberal gasbag Cronkite is still retired. They should have replaced him MUCH earlier with a non-Rather type. In fact, just sell the whole network to Russia, Albania, China, or Cuba...some secular humanist Communist country like that where the CBS people would feel more at home.

Absolutely 100% true- I could not have put it better myself. Cronkite and Rather are so politically incorrect, it is not even funny.

Given my druthers, I'd have enjoyed Cronkite replaced by Triumph the Insult Dog in ... oh ... 1960. Then Rather replaced by a 1957 Buick LaSabre, and Scheiffer by a giant squid. Now, we're talkin!

That is the trouble when you have a bunch of bulletproof jerks in the high echelon. Cronkite and Wallace regard their positions as unassailable and for all practical purposes they are right.

They are trying to distance themselves from Rather and would have been better served with muted praise or silence. They are insulated from criticism, but someone they read is bound to raise the issue.

I think we fail to credit Cronkite for something. His comments over many years have indicated that he was troubled by Dan Rather. Dan is a goof who became overly powerful at CBS because he was a darling of the liberals resulting from childish confrontations with Nixon. I recall Cronkite expressing misgivings about Rather going back many years.

"Given my druthers, I'd have enjoyed Cronkite replaced by Triumph the Insult Dog in ... oh ... 1960."

"I'll take the job, Mr. Murrow, but only because this is a great set here at Black Rock...FOR ME TO POOP ON!"

"Then Rather replaced by a 1957 Buick LaSabre,"

"Vroom! Vroom!" *train whistle*

"and Scheiffer by a giant squid."

"And now the news, brought to you by Cthulu."
