Jealousy is a factor. And yeah, I can see that the fact the family was eating can foster insecurity.
It has nothing to do with sentimentality. To make the mistake of assuming that these creatures are not very very intelligent is a GRAVE error that can cost you your life. You bet those two could have been jealous. They knew it was not for them, and knew that the Davis' were not part of their "Group". IE fair game.
These are creatures with VERY strong emotions and NONE of the humanity that we use every minute of the day to control those emotions. They ACT on them. And in an INSTANT. Snetiment has NOTHING to do with it. Recognition of reality does. Ask anyone at Washington State that has worked in the Chimp Lab. they will all tell you the same thing.
"So you believe that somehow the loose chimps KNEW that the cake was for Moe?"
These people visited this chimp and showered it with attention.
I don't know your experience with animals but I've had DOGS who would have known who that cake was for and acted out.
