Friday was the last day in office for California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, who has already packed up his office and left town.
"Kevin Shelley was here on Tuesday. (He) called an agency-wide staff meeting. (He was) very, very cordial, very pleasant. (He) thanked the staff for all of their hard work," said Secretary of State Office spokeswoman Caren Daniels-Meade.
Shelley stepped down after being investigated for misuse of government money. He made the announcement last month and was set to resign March 1. But he extended the date until Friday because of administrative reasons.
Shelley faces federal and state investigations into misspent voting funds, tainted contributions, and questionable hiring practices.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has nominated former state Sen. Bruce McPherson to replace Shelley.

SACRAMENTO - Kevin Shelley spent his last day as California secretary of state on Friday, closing a tumultuous chapter in the office's history and clearing the way for confirmation hearings March 16 for his nominated replacement, Republican former state Sen. Bruce McPherson.
Shelley's 26-month tenure as California's 28th secretary of state was scheduled to end at midnight Friday. A Democrat, he resigned Feb. 4 amid numerous investigations into his personal and ethical conduct as the state's top elections official.
Aides said he spent the day in his San Francisco home, attending to paperwork.
Shelley, 49, the son of former San Francisco Mayor and U.S. Rep. Jack Shelley, and a former San Francisco County supervisor and state assemblyman, did not comment nor issue a statement.
He spent his last day in Sacramento on Tuesday, said spokeswoman Caren Daniels-Meade. Shelley convened a 45-minute meeting, she said, where he thanked staffers and wished them well.

His imminent departure turned the spotlight toward McPherson, 61, who was nominated last month by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to preside over California's 16.5 million registered voters and its 58 county elections offices. The Senate Rules Committee scheduled a March 16 hearing to consider confirming McPherson, an 11-year state lawmaker from Santa Cruz who stepped down last year due to term limits.
The Assembly has not scheduled a hearing.
State lawmakers have 90 days to act on the governor's nomination and McPherson cannot assume the office until he is confirmed. If neither house votes on his nomination, or one house approves it and the other does nothing, his confirmation will take effect.
If confirmed, McPherson will finish the remainder of Shelley's term, which expires in 2007.
