Goat, Baby Rhino Make Odd Couple

Rhino's Mother Killed By Poachers

POSTED: 7:15 am CST March 2, 2005
UPDATED: 7:19 am CST March 2, 2005

An adult goat at a nature preserve has adopted a baby rhinoceros whose mother was killed by poachers.

Keepers at the preserve, which is 30 minutes northwest of Johannesburg, said that when the baby rhino arrived, he was lost until he spied a goat through the fence on a neighboring farm.

The goat came up to the rhino and they seemed communicate through the fence. The rest is history.

The rhino follows the goat wherever she goes and the goat looks out for the baby rhino.

The rhino's name is "Clover" and the goat is named "Bok-Bok."

Their friendship will not last long. As soon as Clover stops requiring milk, it will be moved to the adult rhino area, without Bok-Bok.

Sounds like my friends Ox who has two pet goats. The Ox is a rather laid back dude. He is moreso with the goats.

Yes!  When you watch the video, you can hear munching sounds from the rhino and, surprisingly, nobody tried to eat the microphone   :-)

Sounds more like Democrats  :-)

Thankfully, this infant rhino has not yet followed in the hoof-steps of some of it's less-congenial relatives

Even so, if it had been a baby hippo instead of a baby rhino, it still would have pinned the meter on the cuteness scale  :-)

Now let me get this straight. Are they saying that Bok-bok the goat is nursing little Clover?

And according to the late hunter/author Peter Hathaway Capstick, it is Hippos of all the african megafauna who kill the most people in deepest darkest. They do most of their grazing at night and tend to charge anyone who runs into them.

The Hippopotamus

I shoot the hippopotamus
With bullets made of platinum
Because if I use leaden ones
His hide is sure to flatten 'em.

Cute pictures! Is the rhino being interviewed in the last one?

"What plans to you and Bok-Bok have for the future?"

"I don't know about Bok-Bok, but I want to go to the U.S. and become a R-I-N-O senator..."

Now let me get this straight. Are they saying that Bok-bok the goat is nursing little Clover?

Although the pictures and the video here show the zoo handlers feeding Clover, this story from the Sun states that the rhino has been nursing from the goat:

The Sun Newspaper Online - UK's biggest selling newspaper

BREAKING NEWS
Goat is rhino's nanny

By SUN ONLINE REPORTERA GOAT has adopted a baby rhinoceros whose mother was killed by poachers.

When the baby arrived at a nature reserve in South Africa, it was lost until it spied the goat through a fence.

The pair appeared to communicate through the fence until keepers put them together in the reserve.

The rhino is said to follow the goat wherever it goes and the goat looks after the baby rhino, even giving it milk.

But once it stops feeding, the rhino will separated from the goat and moved into the adult rhino area.

And according to the late hunter/author Peter Hathaway Capstick, it is Hippos of all the african megafauna who kill the most people in deepest darkest. They do most of their grazing at night and tend to charge anyone who runs into them.

I've also heard that, and I promise you that I have no intention of getting near any hippos.  Stoats tend to mind their own business anyway, generally staying in their caves and using the internet, as well as enjoying an occasional steak and a nice single-malt scotch  :-)

I've heard that....and apparently this can sometimes cause adults to be dangerous, where they may charge at vehicles, perhaps not understanding what they are.
