And it was all Bush's fault because he pulled out of Kyoto!!

Volcanic eruptions in Siberia 251 million years ago may have started a cascade of events

251,000,000 -- how accurate!

Yeah, also the article stated "may have started" a cascade of events...It's like getting an envelope in the mail stating "you MIGHT be a winner....

Very true, a fine choice of words. ;-)

The problem I have believing it is that (1) it'd take absolutely huge quantities of such stuff in the air to have any impact (2) there is precious little evidence of widespread huge spikes in the time dimension in deposited sulfur in rock strata. The whole thing looks to me like a rather silly hack tower.

According to this source, something on the order of "3 million cu km ... of basalt was blasted out from the core and mantle of the Earth, accompanied by gasses and debris which were injected into the atmosphere. Not just your normal volcanic eruption."

Siberia on the Western Edge of the Panthalassic Ocean.

Siberia had a milder climate during the Ordovician.

Thanks to Ichneumon for the links.

No, you've got it right...SUV's (Siberian Un-frickin'-believably-huge Volcanos).

Actually, it was on a Thursday, 250,814,363 years ago.

LOL!

I wonder......did they take into consideration that fraction of a second we gain or lose every few eons?

One of the most misleading titles I have ever read.

It's the original title. What do you find misleading about it?

Just read the first paragraph.

Global warming was an effect not a cause.

It's theorized that global warming led to the release of the hydrogen sulfide into the atmosphere and the oceans, thus poisoning almost all living species. True, the Siberian Trap volcanos got the warming started (it would seem), but it was the warming that led to the hydrogen sulfide release. So the title is not completely off-base, it seems to me.

I guess you would have been more comfortable if the title had mentioned the volcanos?

During the end-Permian extinction 95 percent of all species on Earth became extinct, compared to only 75 percent during the K-T when a large asteroid apparently caused the dinosaurs to disappear.

Not apparently, Not ever!! There was no asteroid that caused the Dinosaurs to become extinct. I wish the media would get over that long debunked hypothesis. Yeah, I know it sounds cool with the Hollywood ending to the Dinos but it's not based in reality.

But speaking of Dinosaurs, If the Siberian traps caused the mass extinction in the Permian that would give more credence to the Deccan Traps being the culprit in the mass extinction in the Cretaceous.

Maybe you've seen this:

The Deccan Traps Volcanism-Greenhouse Dinosaur Extinction Theory

A quote from that study:

"The Deccan Traps volcanism was one of the greatest episodes of mantle plume volcanism in Earth history, and the vast bulk of its lavas erupted right at K-T boundary time. The duration of its eruptions was coeval with major shifts in the carbon and oxygen stable isotope records, "Strangelove conditions" in the oceans, and the K-T bioevolutionary turnover. In addition, it occurred simultaneously with other phenomena such as marine transgression, reduced photosynthesis of terrestrial and marine floras, and reduced weathering rates that would all have contributed to producing a major trans-K-T perturbation of the carbon cycle (McLean, 1995)."

Yep, since the article states that Volcanism is the root cause of the chain of events leading to the Permian Extinction.

It would seem by the title that global warming caused Volcanism, when some theories suggest that an asteroid strike let to the Volcanism.

I understand (although I must confess that the title didn't give me the impression that global warming caused the volcanoes).
