From 2001:

Cats, dogs, hyenas, and other animals have personality traits in much the same way humans do, according to Samuel D. Gosling, a University of Texas at Austin psychologist who is working toward developing a new gravy train field in animal personality.

Human FReepers (and anthropomorphic animal FReepers that can type) can find their personality type here:

They are studying a European relative of chickadees called the great tit (Parus major).

"Ah, my little chickadee, I see you have a prodigious pair of Parus majors."

Wonder if Endemol productions underwrites any of these studies ... or merely donates in sponsored TV "reality show" time all manner of fodder for thought.

Correction: I think the animal rights movement has admirable principles in the abstract, but frequently seems inane insane in practice.

That's the Eysenk model for personality, one which is derived directly from features identified by evolutionary psychologists as being crucial towards group survival.

The main problem with this particular study is that we don't know if the personality traits identified in these kinds of birds are either homologous or analogous to those in humans, so how much they can say about us or other species is up in the air.

Speaking of which, I think the animal rights movement has admirable principles in the abstract, but frequently seems inane in practice.

Ugh. Not me. They have serious goals which are not in sync with our standards of liberty. I am 100% in approval of the animal welfare people though. But there's a serious intermingling of the two. I've worked with several dog rescues, and the rightists are just plain goofy.
