Top Zarqawi Henchman Identified in New Statement from Al-Qaida in Iraq

Al-Qaida's Jihad Committee in Mesopotamia--led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi--has issued a new statement signed by "Abu Abdelrahman al-Iraqi", identified as Zarqawi's "Deputy Commander" in Iraq. In his communique, Abu Abdelrahman declares, "May Allah bless you, O’ soldiers of Allah and lions of al-Tawheed wherever you are and in whatever country you are fighting the enemies of Allah… O’ nation of Islam, prepare yourself for good tidings... We ask every mujahid to stay firm in his jihad and his religion and never to accept peace or a truce because weakness has spread throughout the nations of the infidels and good tidings of victory are visible on the horizon... O’ Allah, defeat America and its allies and make them and their possessions into a reward for the Muslims. O’ Allah, demolish America and shake its foundations… O’ Allah of heaven, earth, and the seas, destroy America and make its power into a reward for the Muslims. Cast whatever power they had into the sea and let it drown."

SV-Another name to add to the list.  Thanks to Cap Huff for the heads up on this one.

Ten militants killed in sweep in Chechnya

MOSCOW. Feb 28 (Interfax) - Illegal armed units suffered serious losses in a sweep operation launched in Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district on Thursday.

"Ten militants have been killed and eight others seriously wounded, among them people of various ethnic origin, including foreigners," Chechen Deputy Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov told Interfax on Monday.

Russian forces also sustained losses, he said. "Three policemen were killed on the first day of the operation and four servicemen were wounded," Kadyrov said.

The operation will continue until its goals have been attained, he said.

Ten Abu Sayyaf rebels surrender
ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AFP) - Ten members of the al-Qaeda-linked Muslim Abu Sayyaf group surrendered Monday to troops in the southern Philippines, an official said.

They gave up their weapons to the navy in Sanga-sanga island, part of the Tawi-Tawi group near the Malaysian side of Borneo island, Commodore Rufilo Lopez said. Their names were not released.

The Abu Sayyaf is a small group of Islamic militants which has been linked by Washington and Manila to the al-Qaeda network of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden. The group is responsible for a rash of kidnappings in the southern Philippines, including of three Americans in 2001 and 21 mostly European hostages in 2000.

The Abu Sayyaf also claimed responsibility for three bombings on Valentine's Day that killed 12 and wounded more than 150 others.

Pakistan arrests three suspected Sunni militants

KARACHI, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Pakistani police arrested three suspected Sunni Muslim militants, who had been plotting attacks on rivals, in raids in the southern city of Karachi and seized grenades and pistols, officials said on Monday. The suspects were members of the outlawed Sunni Muslim Lashkar-e-Jhangvi group -- blamed by police for a spate of attacks on members of the minority Shi'ite Muslim community, they said.

Two members of the group -- identified as Mohammed Ishaq and Imran -- were arrested on Monday morning in a raid in Karachi's main commercial district of Saddar, said Gul Hameed Sumo, an additional deputy inspector general of police. "Several hand grenades and automatic pistols were found in their possession," he said.

A third Lashkar-e-Jhangvi member, with grenades and a pistol, was arrested late on Sunday in a raid in the eastern Korangi neighbourhood, police said. The suspects were planning attacks on Shi'ite Muslims, police said. There has long been rivalry in Pakistan between majority Sunnis and minority Shi'ites but sectarian violence has surged in recent years. President Pervez Musharraf, an important ally in the U.S.-led war on terrorism, has vowed to eradicate militancy and to establish a society characterised by "enlightened moderation".

He said last week he was encouraged that Sunni militants had not been able to launch deadly attacks during the recent holy month of Muharram -- a particularly important period for Shi'ites which has been marred in the past by militant attacks.Security forces arrested suspected militants in several cities before the climax of Muharram on Feb. 20. The Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has also targeted top government officials, Western interests and other religious minorities in recent years. The group has ties with Afghanistan's former ruling Taliban and other militant groups.

I remember reading about the Six-day war. The more the arab armies were losing, the more hysterical and grandiloquent the state-controlled propaganda. By those standards, these guys must have two feet and one hand in the grave.

Thanks for the ping. Re the Abu Sayyaf surrender; my guess is that they surrendered as they need medical treatment for infections and that there is a split among the terrorists.
