Thousands rally for school funding (it'll never be enough...)

Several thousand parents, students, teachers, and other school employees rallied at the State Capitol on Monday evening, calling for more education funding from the state.

It was probably the largest education rally at the Capitol in recent years, and it drew more than 175 busloads of participants from such Twin Cities school districts as Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Osseo and Mounds View. Organizers said people came from as far away as Duluth, Mankato and Rochester. Despite the impressive turnout, participation may have been short of the 6,000 to 7,000 people organizers had hoped for. Although an initial State Patrol estimate put the crowd at about 6,000, the crowd size was closer to 4,500, according to Capitol security and grounds staff estimates.

Still, parked buses clogged John Ireland and Martin Luther King Boulevards adjacent to the Capitol and were slowing traffic on some of the side streets in the area a half-hour after the rally ended. Cold weather didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd, which displayed a forest of colorful signs all voicing ways to say the same thing: Give schools more money.

I demand a refund of all of my school taxes since I homeschool. And all those screaming for more money, they can choose to pay more into the system.

Hey, why not have a national telethon and get U2 and others to perform. I bet they would make a lot of money. Yes, I am being sarcastic.

From thread number:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1352501/posts

Redleg's post to me:
To trash the public schools is unrealistic. Unfortunately, it is going to take concentrated effort by those of us not in it to correct the problem that has been building for the past 25 years or more. Probably since the introduction of "New Math", back in the early 60s, but the education establishment isn't going to acknowledge, let alone fix their failures, so we "laypersons" are going to have to fix it, and that will mean leaving their trampled carcasses in our wake.

My post to Redleg:
I think your heart is in the right place but you have been programmed to think that the "school problems" can be "fixed."

The problems with the schools are unfixable, for they are about schools systems, cultures and values. There is no fix, no better curriculum, no better or more teacher fix. It is not about those things. There is a sea change in the culture that is not stoppable.

You ask me not to stand in the way. This is my money that you plan to use...I have just as much of a stake in what you do as you do. Financially I am tired of leftists telling me to shut up and pay for whatever Utopian program they are emotionally invested with in the moment.

I spent quite a bit of my vacation time at the capitol in past years to help lobby to get "concealed carry" passed here. It never ceased to amaze me how many kids were out of school being little activists (usually dragged by their moms) to "fight" for this or "fight" against that.
More often than not, their "fight" somehow involved promoting forced expenditures of other people's money or intruding on other people's rights. Meanwhile they know little about why they're there other than another day to skip school.
