Here is a letter my son wrote to a senator as a requirement for his Citizenship/Nation merit badge. He borrowed from Bob Schindler for the last line. :-)
I'm a fourteen year old boy, who has had diabetes since age two. Two of my three siblings are either physically or mentally disabled.
In Germany, in the 1930's, the people were taught to accept euthanasia of the disabled, or those "unworthy of life". It was done through books, newspapers, posters, and movies. Today, two movies promote those same ideas.
In "The Sea Inside" a quadriplegic fights the court system for his right to be euthanized. However, the ending of the movie is deceptive. Based on a true story, the quadriplegic drank cyanide prepared for him by his friend, and videotaped his own death. In the movie he is shown to die a peaceful death. In reality, he spent an hour in agony.
The newly released movie, "Million Dollar Baby" pretends
to be about boxing or a love story. It becomes a movie
about another quadriplegic. In this movie the disabled person also asks for help to die, and is
successful. Euthanasia is portrayed as a loving,
compassionate act.
These movies remind me of the propaganda used in Germany during the 1930's to brainwash the public.
People today have a right to refuse medical treatment.
The Right to Die movement is trying to influence us toward the killing of the disabled.
I applaud and praise the Schindlers in their important work to educate us all. I hope they are successful in their quest to stop their daughter from being killed.
All people are made in God's image and have value beyond what they can produce
for society on the whole.
The disabled in this country are given parking spaces but denied water and food.
It's time for a change.
Sincerely,
