CAR-AZY PRICES
NY Post ^ | ALY SUJO

February 26, 2005 -- For a car that can go from zero to 60 in less than three seconds, the Saleen 7 is one hot set of wheels. But at a shriek-inducing $559,500, it's hardly a hot seller. The S7, which tops Forbes magazine's list of high-priced autos, is a race car that's been "tamed" for the billionaire impulse shopper.

Unfortunately, no one's biting.

Zero to 60 in 3 seconds...sheesh...I coulda beat all those guys in GTOs and 4-4-2s back in the 1960s.

Nice car. But one yahoo in a 76 Ford pickup could reduce it to twisted tin foil at an intersection. Kind of silly to pay that much for a car.

I love the Saleen. A very good example, run by ACEMCO Racing in the American Le Mans Series, will be racing at Le Mans this June. And a somewhat older version driven by the rapid John Young, races when he can get the money together in the Speed World Challenge and strikes terror into the hearts of Corvettes!

People need to find out about these cars and the Cadillac CTS-V which will blow the doors off BMWs and Audis and are track ready right off the showroom floor.

I think it was a 52 Plymouth that had the lowest 0 to 60 time. If memory serves it was estimated to go from 0 to 60 in 0.4 seconds.
It was done with the catapult on a aircraft carrier.

This has got to be in the running for understatement of the millenium.

... Other deluxe wheels included the Mercedes-Benz-designed Maybach 62, a sedan with a twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter, 543-hp V-12 engine. It's described as the most expensive non-sports car on the market at $377,750....

Check out the rear seats...

...not to mention a pothole on the interstate. Look at that ground clearance--six inches?

Funny you mention the Maybach. Last weekend I went to Central Park to walk the dog and check out the Gates exhibit and the crowds. Coming onto the roadway, I noticed a crowd and went over to investigate. There, in a row, were three Maybachs on loan to the artist Christo so he could tool around the park (which was closed to all other vehicular traffic). They were pretty impressive in the flesh (the cars, that is).

I think the Corvettes will be just fine. You don't expect GM to just sit there and take this, do you? My dad works there, and he drives a Z06, incidentally. They can build a vette like that Saleen, but marketability is also a factor.

The prices of ALL new cars are ridiculous! I remember in the 70's, I was in a class at GTE being held by a lady who's Dad was in the military, she said that her Dad told her in 20 years prices of cars would be as much as the price of a house was than.

None of us beleived her, I happened to write that in a note to myself, guess what? The prices are what the cost of a new home was than. I often wonder how her Dad found that out being a Major in the military.

What was the best a souped up GTO could do back then? 0-60 in 5.5?? What can your 300C do?

About 5.9. But the SRT-8 version will put it down into the low 5's.

But those old goats would only set the average Joe back maybe a third of a year's wages, and said guy could actually work on them himself.

LOL!!

But you must admit, you'd feel pretty cool tooling around the Northway in a Saleen 7...get some nice looks at The Spa in August and stop traffic in Lake George on Labor Day Weekend.
