The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings are the granddaddies of quest fantasy novels, and so many other books imitate them (and also the fact that the latter was a trilogy -- I don't think you can sell a single fantasy book anymore if you can't make it a trilogy.)

It seems for most fantasy authors, quantity is not a problem. In fact it drives some readers nuts, especially if you run across discussions of books penned by Terry Goodkind and Robert Jordan. Some readers think fantasy series go on for way too long or are just filler to keep the series going. (I ran across these pages taking
Jordan and
Goodkind to task for just that.)
