Schieffer brothers dismiss 'inside line from Japan to CBS'

NEW YORK — Thomas Schieffer, the next U.S. ambassador to Japan, may be "the worst" news source for his elder brother, Bob, the incoming interim anchor of "CBS Evening News."

Bob Schieffer, the host of the network's popular "Face the Nation" news program, jokingly made the prediction in an interview with the New York Times published Friday.

"In the beginning, people said, 'Oh, he's going to be a great source for you,"' Bob said. "I say, 'He's going to be the worst source I ever had!

"No. 1, when you're talking to a United States ambassador on an open line, you're talking to every intelligence agency in the world. Sometimes the echo is so loud," CBS's chief Washington correspondent said in the front-page article titled "Inside Line from Japan to CBS? No Chance, Say the Schieffers."

President George W Bush on Jan 21 announced the nomination of Thomas Schieffer, his longtime Texas friend and former business partner in the Texas Rangers baseball team, as ambassador to Tokyo, replacing Howard Baker.

"What we depend on more than anything else are each other's integrity," Thomas told the Times. "I recognize that there are certain places I can't go with him, and places he can't go with me."

"I don't talk to Tom about Dan Rather," his elder brother said, referring to the current CBS Evening News anchor who will leave the anchor's chair March 9 due partly to a discredited report on Bush's National Guard service.

"Tom doesn't talk to me about George Bush," Bob promised. (Kyodo News)

Well, brother Bob is not holding up his end of the bargain, Tom. He is as dishonest and biased as Blather.

Ahhhh, but that's just what they want you to think.

Unless, of course, you're already one of them. < cue suspicious music >
