Scientologist Elfman wants to ‘clear the planet’ (Hollywood at it's Best)
MSNBC ^ | February 18, 2005 | Jeanette Walls

Posted on 02/18/2005 10:03:26 PM PST by huac

"...“I intend to make Scientology as accessible to as many people as I can. And that is my goal,” Elfman said. To do this, she says, it is my “duty to clear the planet.” By “clearing” she means to rid the world of “body thetans” — aliens who Scientologists believe inhabit the earth from a nuclear explosion 75 million years ago..."

It does make a major effort to recruit entertainers – is it because they are more gullible than the average population, have the potential of making good money to donate, or because much of the general population follow the entertainers like sheep? All the above?
I read “Dianetics” way back when. Hubbard didn’t make sense then and I haven’t seen where he makes any sense now.

From the folks that gave us "Battlefield Earth", possibly the worst film ever made. One of John Travolta's shining moments!

I hear they're filming "Gigli: Unleashed" as we speak.

I think that the Germans may still have the plans and blueprints they used for this purpose 60 or so years ago.

She should check it out.

Have to ask the Islamics for them now, they bought a
cloned CD of them at the Souk.

The Church of Scientology owns a former hotel in downtown Clearwater, Florida and has bought up much of the property in downtown Clearwater. Their members run many of the shops scattered around downtown. The hotel is called the Flagship (Mothership?). There are communal type living arrangements around the area. I think that the Scientoloty facility in Hollywood is a similar arrangement.

Everyone knows SS is a liberal democrat. Dreiser, London and Stienback were bordline communists. Still great writers. E.T. is a great work of popular art! What other film captures the emotional epiphanies of childhood with more poetry? It's up there with Pinnochio or Bambi in that regard. It resonated with so many people for a reason. I understand it even played well in places like Malaysia so universal was its impact.
Everything good about the Indy films was because SS. The idea is old hat Republic serial pulp. Spielberg gave it the flair of screwball comedy. Look at the films that Lucas directs himself to see how stiff it would have been if he had done it.
As for Schindler's List, all great films are entertaining..even tragedies. And you can only compare SL to dramatic treatments of the Holocaust. Shoah is on another level entirely. Unfair to compare. SL is still a great cultural document. Only he could have made it. (if he had made it today and not 1993 we would have Tom Hanks as Schindler so be grateful!)
Llastly, I think a film that did much more to reinforce the negative images of Vietnam was 'Coming Home'. Horrible. Do you remember that piece of garbage? At least At least AN was great film making.

I just noticed that she and her daughter who followed her later always had a hard stare when they talked to you....like they wanted to look through you.

I don't know any Scientologists personally, but the ones I've encountered in the mall giving out stress tests all had that creepy stare. Probably a side effect of all the hypnosis and auditing they go through.

To even approach fiction with the intent of garnering historical truth is misguided. 'The Scarlet Letter' used to be thought by many to be a Primer about the Puritans when in truth they were much less uptight then their moody descendant Hawthorne made them out to be. Even historical fiction of transcendent greatness (Tolstoy, Shakespeare) is still inevitably riddled with inaccuracies. The tools of the artist and historian are just different.

Now if The Masses just realized that.
Braveheart was a great movie – but the historical inaccuracies were mind boggling. Particularly the battle of Stirling Bridge – minus a bridge, and the Scots wearing kilts instead of tunics – but it was a great movie. I could handle the love affair between Wallace and the princess. Artistic license is needed at times to draw the box office.

"Hate them all you want for their attitude to Christianity interacting and being displayed by the government, but don't go off half cocked. You trot out statements that easily refuted in a forum where there's undecided people watching and it hurts all of us."

Thanks for your ignorent and school marmish advice to me. Either you misread my comments or you simply have me confused with a different lobster. I don't believe I have "trotted out" any positions that are 'easily refuted.' Since you have designated yourself as the opinion police I am guessing that you yourself are not a big fan of free speech standards. Considering that you joined yesterday to fabricate comments that people are making here I'm guessing that you must be a bit of a reactionary.

I wonder if her husband is kin to Danny Oingo Boingo Elfman who does lots of scores and soundtracks now?

Danny Elfman is Bodhi's uncle, yes.

The former is not a ScientologistTM, as evidenced by the fact that his compositions are still good. (Cf. later Chick Corea albums.)

I believe they also have a reading "program" that they have managed to get into elementary schools and prisons.

I believe you're thinking of "The Way to Happiness," which is a little booklet intended to teach some rather simplistic morals, though of course it is a "gateway" to allow Hubbard's droolings into these institutions surreptitiously. The word ScientologistTM does not appear anywhere on the site thewaytohappiness.org (which I refuse to actively link to and raise its relevancy on the search engines).

I'm not sure what it was, but it was something like steam rooms to sweat out body toxins.

That is the Purification Rundown. It's also used extensively by the cult's anti-drug front group Narconon.
