Calif. GOP changes rule to back governor (Schwarzenegger)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Although Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has not revealed whether he will seek re-election, the California Republican Party on Sunday changed a party rule and endorsed him 16 months before the 2006 gubernatorial primary.

Delegates at the state GOP convention decided to make an exception to the party's policy of not endorsing candidates before the primary elections so Republicans can pay some early expenses - such as bulk mailing and voter registration- should Schwarzenegger decide to run again.

"The Democratic Party is already raising money to field candidates for this office," said Karen Hanretty, a party spokeswoman. "To remain competitive, the party had to make this necessary, one-time rule change."

A voice vote on the endorsement was "overwhelmingly supportive of the governor," Hanretty said.

The proposal caused longtime GOP activist Dora Kingsley to resign her seat on the party rules committee on Friday. Kingsley, who did not attend Sunday's convention, said she thought making an exception for Schwarzenegger could result in the loss of voter confidence by discouraging challengers.

Glad to see that the California GOP appreciates and supports Arnold -- to the chagrin of the Democrats.

When Simon ran the party couldn't life a finger to help. Schwarzenegger hasn't even stated whether he'll run in 2006, and the party has already bent over backwards to help with his expenses a year early.

Oooooookay!

At least it's nice to know we have two parties in the state. There's the democrat party and the dumbocrat party.

If the republican party at the nation level was any better, it would file papers to prevent the dumbocrat party from sullying the name republican.

Of course it was probably behind this.

I expect him to be re-elected. Why desert a winning horse?

Challengers? How stupid *IS* the GOP in this state? We must stay unified behind Arnold's plans to break the back of the Democrat stronghold. The Dem legislature believes he's weak. We MUST NOT embolden them.

Just watch, the McClintock kook faction will swarm and split the party giving the Dems a clear opening.

Yes, to chagrin of both the libs and Dora Kingsley, who has always been a useless member of the GOP. I'm glad she's taking her sour grapes and going home. VIVA ARNOLD!

Big difference - we have the Governors office and this time, intend on keeping it.

The McClinkooks don't scare the Governor. They took their best shot at him and only came up with 13%. LOL. They're toast.

How is it, you being from Michigan and all, purport to have such intimate knowledge as to who within the State GOP is useless?

Who is "We"?

It seems you are not interested in furthering anything conservative. By demonizing conservatives, you aid in pushing the party further toward the communist-socialist left within the California democratic party, abandoning much of what the party stands for. You call this positive progress?

Means nothing when what the governor pushes is pure socialism.

I guess when you're pushing Marxism & totalitarianism, socialism isn't a bad alternative.
