Mark Dayton Not Running For Re-election
Minneapolis Star Tribune (aka The Red Star) ^

Posted on 02/09/2005 9:59:41 AM PST by MplsSteve

Wow, if this is true Minnesota is gonna be a huge free for all in '06.

Everybody and their brother will run for this seat.

The DFL still has a large reservoir of talent even though the GOP has pulled to almost parity in recent elections.

Opinions anyone?

This gives the Democrats two years to organize. I should think that much depends on the state of their political machine and on what kind of replacement candidate they can find. Obviously Dayton turned out to be a loser for them. He bought his seat but couldn't hold onto it.

Yes he was that very same Clymer.

What about St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly?

Kelly touts DFL ties and party supporters

As if to put an exclamation point on his repeated declarations of "I am a Democrat," St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly on Tuesday announced that more than a dozen members of the party are backing his reelection effort.

They include U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, St. Paul City Council Member Dan Bostrom, and past and present locally elected officials. Aside from Bostrom, none of the local advocates currently represents St. Paul.

I doubt the loony left here in MN would support Randy Kelly.

IIRC, they ran a petition trying to recall him when he expressed support for President Bush.

I meant he would run as an Independent. I don't think Penny would even try to go back to the DFL party. From watching him over the years, I think he is too moderate.

Rep Mark Kennedy was planning on a run even before Dayton announced his retirement.

Rep Gil Gutknecht was looking at a run too.

Last week, former Sen Rod Grams mentioned that he was looking at it.

Thanks, forgive my ignorance but do any of these guys have a good shot? I am hopeful considering Norm Coleman is from there and (I think) you guys have an R Governor. What are the chances we can pick this seat up?

This is unfortunate. I'd rather run against Dayton than have an open seat race.

This means that both Mark Kennedy and Gil Gutkneckt are in, I suppose.

I wonder if Mike Hatch will try for it?

Dayton is a wussy idiot...good riddance!

Ventura wouldn't even get on the ticket...he's burned too many bridges!

Now, Peterson....there's a thought. Good old timey Blue Dog Democrat. But, I think probably too conservative for this crazy 'rat state. Militant

When was the last time Minnesota had two GOP senators?

"Mark Dayton dropping out of Senate reelection ?"

I hope not. He is probably more vulnerable than several other Democrats. For example, if Congressmen Collin Peterson or Jim Oberstar run, they would be much tougher to beat.

Al Franken also threatened that he's run earlier.

Not that long ago, when they had Durenberger and Boschwitz.

I'm shooting in the dark, but could it have been in the '80's? Boshwitz and Durenburger?

Agreed, the MN Dems have a deep bench.

Though Collin Peterson is VERY Conservative, and if he gets the nomination he would be even more conservative than Ben Nelson in Nebraska so it would be like picking up half a seat in the senate if Peterson wins the election.

However I doubt Peterson would last long in the Dem primary.

Dayton's decision hurts Cantwell, Stabenow, and Jeffords the most, because NRSC can pour more resources into those states.

Win or lose the seat, I am still glad, because we officially know that we are rid of this dangerous nut.

If he makes a run for it, he helps us though. Conservative Minnesota Democrats would have it demonstrated to them just how welcome they are in their party. It might shake a few of them out of their reflexive (D) vote.
