Why is this important? Because thew French and other European negotiators will be singularly unsuccessful in disarming Iran with jaw-boning. They will fail, and once again, the United States will be left to decide whether they will be going it alone in Iran (I am not certain Britain would go with yus this time).

Actually, I don't think the French care if Iran becomes nuclear. French hubris persuades them they can 'contain' and 'control' and prevent the Iranians from doing anything to France, which is all France really cares about. Germany is along for the ride. And the Brits, while well meaning, have too many financial interests in Iran and they are spent with Iraq.

All these 'negotiations' are just window dressing. The objective is to keep the issue from going before the UN Security Counsel for as long as possible. It may never get to the UN. I doubt if sanctions will ever be imposed on Iran, and even if they are, the Iraq experience shows they will be ineffective.

It's Iraq all over again, except the delay is starting even before it goes to the UN, Iran is much further along in developing a nuke, and Iran is a much greater sponsor of terrorism than Iraq was.

The only real unknown is what the US will do about it. If we do nothing (and Israel does nothing), Iran will go nuclear. Israel may try to stop them, but they may be unsuccessful.

I would say that we have more then repaid our debt to France for their help in the Revolutionary War and the Statue of Liberty.

I'd argue that the War of 1812 and the Louisiana Purchase about covered their help during the Rev. War.

Yes, but with France at war with much of Europe at the time, and its Navy just about to be sunk by the British at Trafalgar, there is no way France could have stopped either America or Britain from taking its colony by force, sans payment.

And while the amount was relatively small, it did help France's war time economy...
