That's especially true if the sponsor takes on any more risk than investing in something like an S&P 500 index fund -- for example, if they engage in active stock trading strategies.

We have a mandate to do portable alpha over S&P 500 futures for nearly half of our domestic equity allocation. That adds risk but is not imprudent. More importantly, it gets us our actuarial rate so that we can pay our members.
