Cheney won't run for presidency
Agence France Presse | February 6, 2005

US Vice President Dick Cheney today ruled out running for president in 2008, and said he was "out of here" when President George W Bush's second term expires.

Mr Cheney, who has suffered a series of heart attacks, had said previously that he had no desire to run for president. He repeated his intentions in an interview with Fox News Sunday.

"George Bush recruited me to be his running-mate, and I've enjoyed that immensely," Mr Cheney said. "It's been a tremendous privilege.

"But my ability to serve him depends upon my ability not to have any other agenda other than his agenda. I made it clear when I took this job that I had no aspirations to run for president myself, that I wanted to be a part of his team.

"By 2009, I'll be 68 years old. And I've still got a lot of rivers I'd like to fish and time I'd like to spend with my grandkids, and so this is my last tour. I don't plan to run for anything.

"I've got my plans laid out. I'm going to serve this president for the next four years, and then I'm out of here," Mr Cheney said.

I don't think there was much doubt about this.

This is NEWS?

This was clearly stated from the very beginning, before Pres Bush was even elected.

Heres the Rove plan. Have Cheney run, with somebody else as the VP. Then have Cheney resign.

This has always been part of his strength as VP.

Watch Rice.

There hasn't been so much suspense since Boeing decided to name it's new airplane the "787".

Amen,

The next Republican Presidential candidate is being groomed as we speak; the [liberal] media is just too scared to say so much…

When was the last time we had a sitting President not running for re-election and his Vice President was not a potential candidate to replace him? Did Truman's VP Barkley try to run in 1952?

Hello, all -- Maybe Condi for VP, but...

Have I suggested Donald Rumsfeld for 2008 lately?

OK, then, let me suggest....Donald Rumsfeld - 2008.

If the Vice President wishes to step aside after this term in office, then I think Rumsfeld is best able to continue a strong stand against terror, and least likely to be dragged down by PC concerns.

His vigor and energy are twice that of younger men, and we have clearly seen that he has conceded nothing to age.

Interestingly, in a recent speech to the National Press Club, when Rumsfeld was asked if he were planning to fade into the sunset, he said, and I paraphrase closely, "Dick Nixon said that you wouldn't have him [Nixon] to kick around anymore. I'm saying no such thing!"

Go, Rummy, go!

I guess we're stuck with some primadonna senator like Bill Frist or George Allen.

Did Truman's VP Barkley try to run in 1952?

You have to remember that candidates didn't run in the same sense as they do today. Alban Barkley was in his mid-70's and in poor health in 1952 but Truman would have had him nominated in order to block Kefauver if that was the only way. In the end Stevenson got off the fence and got the nomination. Barkley died in 1956.

No Senators for President ever.

Too compromised and too squishy.

They don't even pick their staff - the bureaucratic machine of the committee system does it for them.

I just made that up, but I'm trying to convey how weak-kneed all Senators are.

It's news to them because they never believe a politician will say what he means, usually they don't.

Cheney isn't going to run, and he's most certainly going to remain in the position until 2008.

Jeb Bush has said he won't run, and I believe him too. The media refuses to.

IMO, Condi's the one being positioned to run IF she wants it.
