Feb 5, 2005 Guys in US are taking up knitting
CHICAGO - ERIC Garcia and Matthew Kane are holed up in a classroom corner, chatting casually as they each knit a sock for a school project.
They ponder the thought that their actions might be a little, well, unexpected.
'Girls can be truckers,' said 11-year-old Eric.
'Yeah, girls can be truckers,' echoed Matthew, who's also 11. 'So why can't guys be knitters?'
A lot of guys are taking up knitting today, especially as the hobby surges in popularity on college campuses, in coffee shops and at the many yarn stores that are sprouting up in cities across the country.
At The Wool Tree in South Lake Tahoe, California, co-owner Robert Lincoln said he had seen more young men coming into the store to buy knitting and crocheting supplies.
Many of them are snowboarders who want to make their own winter gear - as a fashion statement or to save money to buy ski passes. 'It's a little bit of a phenomenon,' said Mr Lincoln.
Long ago, knitting was a male-dominated trade in Europe. Sailors were known to knit their own windproof sweaters for long voyages.
The Craft Yarn Council of America, a trade organisation, has no numbers on guys who knit.
In New York, 42-year-old Tony Limuaco started knitting after the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001, because he found it soothing. Now, his handmade hats are sold in stores around town.
'I have to say, I can't believe how good I am,' he said.
OH my Gawd! hehe!
Heh heh! I thought it was hilarious at my last ob appointment...the doctor I was supposed to be seen by was in the back knitting, according to the doctor who did see me.
I thought the knitting Dr. from my previous appointment was very nice, but slightly effeminate, so this struck my funny bone in a big way. Just thought I would share.
"A lot of guys are taking up knitting today, especially as the hobby surges in popularity on college campuses, in coffee shops and at the many yarn stores that are sprouting up in cities across the country."
College campuses, coffee shops. Says it all.
It's just coming around again. See Rosie Grier in the '70s.
Will the feminazis still be happy about this neutering of the men if they sart knitting Gun sleeves?
The feminization of the U.S. continues apace
All right....I'll say it....heck my brother would say it....homos
Hey, why not? It sounds very SNAG-y to knit a sleeve for your gun.
LOL!!
Yes. My grandfather could knit and he was a tough SOB.
SNAG-y?
My six-year old nephew asked for (and got) a sewing machine for Christmas....(sigh)
I know it!!!! hehe!
I know they COULD be doing worse, but my goodness. Are we becoming a nation of girlie-men?
My boyfriend's dad crochets. He has made my daughter and I beautiful afgans. I did think it strange when I first found out, but now it seems normal when I go to his house and he has all his squares and yarn all organized.
I think it can be a good way for a guy to relax. Keeps his hands busy.
When I was in college, I noticed many of the girls would get together at night and knit. I asked one of the girls if they could show me how. The other guys thought I was crazy. Before you knew it, I was invited to join the girls and I started hanging out with them. I loved it, my plan worked. I made many opposite sex friends that way.
Well, the other guys noticed that, and soon, many others were knitting.
Today, I can't knit a stitch.
I'm not sure what to make of this. After all the postings we see from certain individuals, and now this???
New
Age
Guy
The men in Scotland used to be(I don't know about these days)famous for their knitting. That makes me wonder if William Wallace knitted,LOL. It's hard to picture, but then he was good with other pointed objects:)
