University of Iowa News Release

Feb. 2, 2005

Editor's Note: Iowa players or coaches will not be available to comment on the dismissal of Pierre Pierce. Iowa Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby will answer any questions.

Pierce Dismissed From Men's Basketball Team

University of Iowa basketball player Pierre Pierce has been permanently dismissed from the team. The announcement came today from Head Coach Steve Alford.

"Effective, immediately, Pierre Pierce has been dismissed from the University of Iowa men's basketball team," said Alford.

"I regret this step has become necessary, but Pierre has betrayed the trust we placed in him when he was given a second chance two years ago. Pierre is an excellent basketball player who will be missed by our team. But, given the circumstances, I feel this is the only appropriate response."

Pierce, a 6-4, 195-pound junior guard from Westmont, Ill., was Iowa's leading scorer with a 17.8 average. He was a strong candidate for all-Big Ten honors. He started 80 of 84 games during his Iowa career.

He scored 1,072 career points and had 305 assists in his two-plus years with Iowa. He was co-Most Valuable Player for the Hawkeyes last year and was a third-team all-Big Ten choice. Pierre was named to the Gazette Challenge all-tournament team the last two years.

"Betrayed the trust.... Second chance...."

Pretty strong words. Sounds like a drug or crime thing to me.

In 2002 was charged with third degree sexual assault. Pierce is now under investigation for intent to commit sexual abuse, burglary, criminal mischief and false imprisonment.

He'll fit in well after he's drafted by the Trail Blazers.

Ahhh. Here it is: "Pierce, from Westmont High School, was under investigation for intent to commit sexual abuse, burglary, criminal mischief and false imprisonment for an incident at the home of a former girlfriend."

Just another product of the "student"/athlete thugfest called college sports.

According to the story, nothing impotant enough to mention, but important enough to dismiss him.
My guess is a criminal act.

Yeah but he had to do it. She disrespected him.

From what I have read, Pierce has been accused of allegedly stealing his girlfriend's computer and holding her against her will.

What's really bizarre is that articles have said the girl has been his girlfriend for 2 1/2 years which has me wondering 'is this the same girl who accused him of having sex with her in a manner she did not like.' He sat out one year for the offense.

Very strange.

Well now, you wouldn't want them to be unprepared for the thugfest that is pro sports, would you? ;)
