Why does this rodent get money from the taxpayers?

---

Does he? If so it's because he's cute and wise, and he's the 'Prognosticator of Prognosticators', the 'Seer of all Seers'. We could not do without him.

;-)

Yes, the federal government gives this rodent our tax dollars. I can not remember the amount.

This is pitiful. A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat. What a hype. Well, it used to mean something in this town. They used to pull the hog out, and they used to *eat* it. You're hypocrites, all of you!

What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?

Are you talking about living in France?

Out of life’s great mysteries, no one knows just how the groundhog instinctively knows that there will be 6 more weeks of winter.

Some Zoologists think that the groundhog uses his finger to predict the weather, but they still cannot tell what part of the groundhog helps him determine that there will be 6 more weeks of winter.

Misty eyed, over come by emotion. Its a yiddish word made popular in the 'Coffee Talk' routine done by Mike Meyers on SNL. There...aren't you glad you asked? Is sd for San Diego? In which case, you must find us groundhog fans very amusing.

I love this day for two reasons: "Groundhog Day" is my favorite movie of all time. For you other fans out there, National Review's upcoming issue has a great piece by Jonah Goldberg on the brilliance of this movie. Secondly, Feb 2, 2002 is the day I met my future husband on a blind date. Not unlike Bill Murray's character in the movie, finding love on Feb 2 inspired me to become a better person in many ways :)

just damn.

blazing sun up here in Maine too! the only day of the year I don't want to see it.

But I'm still holding out hope that since, based on moon phases, Easter is in March this year - we may still have an early spring...

Even though the celebration isn't quite the same after the age of fifty, I appreciate the birthday wishes, Dave. :)

Haven’t been here much lately, so apologies for not being in touch or responding to pings of late. Between dealing wit the annual audit at work, putting the finishing touches on our upcoming recital, maintaining a daily bike regimen, and beginning construction on our new home (we are finally building on woodland that we purchased many years ago), sleep is about the only ‘luxury’ allowed just now. :)

Having never designed/built a home from scratch, we are learning the hard way that a township can dictate, via zoning ordinance, one’s every move, right down (practically) to the color you choose for your roof, and the length of the toilet tissue roll in your bathroom (slight exaggerations, but not by much). We’ve managed to successfully challenge some of their dictates, but not without spending significant time, energy and research in doing so.

I do manage to check in here several times a week, just to find out what’s happening in the world, and will probably be back into the fray in a month or so, so please keep my seat here warm in the interim, okay? :)

Again, thanks for the birthday wishes. (It appears that Punxatawny Phil did us proud out in the western part of the state this morning, predicting six more weeks of winter. Let’s assume that means much more snow, too … we haven’t received our fair share so far this winter. :)

~ joanie ...

(God bless the courageous voters of Iraq ... and the American military for making it possible for that courage to be demonstrated so vividly.)

Great quote from Santayana. In CA, I used to watch squirrels, study bird nests, study insect "homes" as indicators of the coming winter. What can I say? It never failed me, and over many years.

It is one of my favorite movies too. The message to make the best of your time on the earth is nicely delivered. The movie was great, and I being a male, loved seeing Andie McDowell. And Bill Murray was wonderful too!
