I don't think they took the right message from the movie.

(The problem with bad ideas is that they seemed like good ideas at the time.)

Here in Vegas a few weeks back they had gang violence and shootings at two theaters when this movie was being shown.

Stop the movie, turn up the lights, shoo out the thugs, fill out paperwork for a refund, or purchase of movie when available on DVD. Fill out paperwork, give home address, urine sample, saliva swab, and while we're at it, smile for the camera, cuz your butt ain't getting in this place no more.

I have the distinct "pleasure" of knowing Coach Ken Carter and his son Damian. Like all movies, the truth is at variance with the facts.

Sounds like a concerted effort to create a movie phenom.

Other showings have been disrupted by shouts and threats from boozed up fans. They sell booze in theaters?

Ken is a great self-promoter. The members of the team he benched have few good things to say. He did have them sign a contract but they thought he wasn't really interested in their grades, but in himself.
I liked Damien, I had him in a unique teaching situation for a couple of days. Dad wasn't all that nice to him (smacking his head, etc). Damian received a West Point appt via George Miller, but sadly, dropped out after one year. I think he could not handle the academics. Too bad.
Ken's local business foundered, he had a sporting goods store. But he managed to get this movie about himself made. On one occasion I was waiting to speak with him but he took care of everyone else (even those who came later) first. I think I was the wrong color.

I hope you'll fill us in on the truth vs. fiction. I never heard of Coach Carter until the movie came out, so I have no reason to think what I watched was anything other than the truth.
(Other than the fact that Hollywood couldn't make a movie telling the truth if the fate of the world depended on it).

See my post #16.
Ken did his benching thing and then he called all the media to tell them what he had done. The kids thought he was more interested in all the PR than in them. Davis had just been elected Gov and he shows up at a game along with several local politicians looking for the camera. I know other teachers resented the situation (told me so) and thought his motives were suspect.
Several of the kids went on record in a recent Contra Costa Times article saying that things weren't as they were portrayed in the movie.
