Young people have been running amok at Sacramento showings of "Coach Carter," the Samuel L. Jackson film about a Richmond basketball coach who straightens out wayward students. Rachel Kahan was at a Century Stadium 14 showing on Arden and Ethan when a riot broke out. "Kids were beating up a security guard, and they attacked the manager," she said. "It was awful. And what makes it worse was that the behavior was exactly what the character Coach Carter is fighting against." Other showings have been disrupted by shouts and threats from boozed up fans. Paramount Pictures, which distributes "Coach Carter," won't comment. The Coach Carter Foundation in Richmond, an organization founded by the film's namesake, Ken Carter, won't comment. Century Theaters won't comment. Sacramento police and the Sacramento County sheriff rolled an "all units" alert to break up the "Coach Carter" brawl at Century Stadium. ...

Imagine that.
Here in Vegas a few weeks back they had gang violence and shootings at two theaters when this movie was being shown.
This is the Democrat Party's "base"
Gotta love those blue cities...
too much OE?
hmmmpff....nothing more needs to be said.
Stop the movie, turn up the lights, shoo out the thugs, fill out paperwork for a refund, or purchase of movie when available on DVD. Fill out paperwork, give home address, urine sample, saliva swab, and while we're at it, smile for the camera, cuz your butt ain't getting in this place no more.
I have the distinct "pleasure" of knowing Coach Ken Carter and his son Damian. Like all movies, the truth is at variance with the facts.
Do tell.
Do tell.
Sounds like a concerted effort to create a movie phenom.
They sell booze in theaters?
But only slightly blue.
Sacramento county: 171,569 for Bush, 175,725 for Kerry.
I liked Damien, I had him in a unique teaching situation for a couple of days. Dad wasn't all that nice to him (smacking his head, etc). Damian received a West Point appt via George Miller, but sadly, dropped out after one year. I think he could not handle the academics. Too bad.
Ken's local business foundered, he had a sporting goods store. But he managed to get this movie about himself made. On one occasion I was waiting to speak with him but he took care of everyone else (even those who came later) first. I think I was the wrong color.
That's a tease if ever there was one.... I hope you'll fill us in on the truth vs. fiction. I never heard of Coach Carter until the movie came out, so I have no reason to think what I watched was anything other than the truth.
(Other than the fact that Hollywood couldn't make a movie telling the truth if the fate of the world depended on it).
bttt
Ken did his benching thing and then he called all the media to tell them what he had done. The kids thought he was more interested in all the PR than in them. Davis had just been elected Gov and he shows up at a game along with several local politicians looking for the camera. I know other teachers resented the situation (told me so) and thought his motives were suspect.
Several of the kids went on record in a recent Contra Costa Times article saying that things weren't as they were portrayed in the movie.
They have security guards at the movie theatre!? Boy, I wish I lived in the big city.
This is why Sacramento needs a Midnight Basketball program.
;0)
Thanks to Guliani, New York City is probably safer per capita than some small Red State towns.
Years ago I sat on my local school board (in WA state). We were searching for a new superintendent and ended up hiring a man, who while he was the football coach, canceled the remaining season when his players broke their contract. In their contract they not only agreed to not drinking alcohol, but to not be at parties where alcohol was being consumed by minors.
His players were busted at a party one weekend and the season was canceled the following week. We liked that idea and that was one of the reasons we hired him.
Was the movie any good?
I thought the movie was good with a few exceptions. I really liked the message. I always felt as a board member that we should expect more than "D" level work from our athletes. Sooooo that was exciting to see in a movie. I will say I left having lots of questions however. Unfortunately they'll never get answered.
"They have security guards at the movie theatre!?"
Here in Medford, Oregon, the local Tinseltown Theater has ARMED security guards!
Why, I have no idea...

Bench clearing brawls in movie houses. Audience participation! Could this be the new Rocky Horror?
Bring rocks in your pocket!
My son took a group of friends (and his parents) to see this movie for his birthday. There was lots of "exhuberance" from the audience. The movie was so-so and predictable. My son already knows the drill-a tutor if grades seem marginal, withhold sports participation if more study time is needed. I thought that was a known strategy and was shocked that a movie could be made about it. I thought it made Black parents look dumb, look like they just want to go to sporting events and keep ambition at bay by playing victim.(like typical DUers)
You usually get to school about 30-40 minutes before classes start. He would have the kids playing basketball in the gym before the first bell. In the afternoons, he started an intramarial program of what was in season - basketball, horseshoes, volleyball, etc. Kids could sign up as various teams, from the different grades, and play each other after school. He had a two-lose bracket system. You lost your first game, you got knocked down into the losers bracket. The next game you lost, you were knocked out. You had a champion of the winners bracket and one for the losers bracket. At the end, the two champions played each other in front of the whole school in the afternoon - as an assembly.
Racial tensions went down, fights went down. He figured, get these kids worked up they would be too tired to fight. Also, get them working together in teams and once they get to know each other, tensions would ease. He was right.
They should make a movie about him.
