"And in 1976, Shulgin fished an obscure chemical called MDMA out of the depths of the chemical literature and introduced it to the wider world, where it came to be known as Ecstasy."

Dr. Shulgin will be hailed as an American hero at DU.

I do not agree.

You display a line of reaction which appears similar to those which lead people to hold firearms designers and manufacturers criminally liable for misuse of their products.

"This is unbelievable, this guy should be in prison, and the New York Slimes is glamorizing him."

In prison for WHAT?

The DEA doesn't think so. Why do you?

Shulgin is a genius, and one day many people will benefit from his work.

He is providing a "cook book" for manufacturing an illegal substance. Firearms are not illegal, what can be done with them may be, so this logic is flawed.

"Asked if they had suffered any effects from their remarkable drug histories, they laughed. ''You mean negative effects?'' "

I've rarely seen the Times go off on such an unmitigated love fest like this. It reads like something written in the 1970's. Some baby boomers apparently are still deluded enough to believe this nonsense. The above quote sounds like something I heard from friends who are now either dead or brain damaged.

It is not illegal to tell people how to create drugs. Your logic is flawed.

Dr Shulgin's work started at Dow, where he patented nearly 150 drugs. Then he began to work for the DEA doing research. His first book, PIHKAL is half personal account and half Merck guide on this class of chemicals - that he basically invented/discovered.

All of you luddites can thank Dr Shulgin for lots of chemicals and compounds that honestly do make life better for all of us every day - many of the tools used in brain disorder diagnostics and care also came from Dr Shulgin. Likewise, some of the CIA's most effective mind-bending compounds also came from his labs - incapacitation agents, "truth serums", chemically induced remote viewing compounds, etc. It's not all about dope, any more than the WOD is.

How many of you Einsteins have over 150 patents to your name? The percentage of flat worlders on this thread is amazing. And FYI, wagglebee, it's not exactly a "cookbook". None of his lab procedures can be followed by the vermin who make meth and the other crap you find on the street. Not only can they not obtain the precursors, but they have no knowledge of the equipment required, or how to avoid the certain death that results from improper use of those precursors. Some of the compounds he invented become psychoactive with just a few micrograms - his goal was to find an agent that would be active with only one molecule. He came close.

lots of things are illegal to possess and judiciously use that shouldn't be - you do recall the AWB and the anti-gun laws in the more draconian Leftist States, yes?

the ball's back in your court.
try to go to the hoop this time.

However, as a nation which follows the rule of law, we should obey the laws even when we disagree with them. I don't support the bombing of abortion clinics any more than I support abortion.

Firearms have legitimate and socially beneficial uses. The horrid poisons developed by this "man" do not.

Only if you're a deconstructionist. In which case, nothing means anything, and trying to have a discussion is a waste of time.

I support laws proscribing harm, not possession or judicious use. That isan't anarchy by a long shot.
