FORT HUACHUCA - With the screams of his fellow soldiers from Fort Huachuca, Nathaniel Hicks used of barrage of punches in the final round to claim a 25-18 decision over Paul Eghareva of Fort Drum, N.Y., on Saturday night at the All Army Boxing Championships at Barnes Field House.
"It motivated me when they started to scream my name, and it gave me more power to go out there and do good," Hicks said.
Hicks, however, won't be advancing to the Armed Forces Championship, Feb. 17-19 at Fort Huachuca in the 165-weight class, but he did walk away with the bronze medal.
Quentin McCoy of Fort Carson, Colo., won a close bout 33-32 over Yamar Resto of Fort Carson to advance to the Armed Forces Championships at 165.
"Man, that was a tough fight there, it could've went either way; I'm glad it went mine," McCoy said. "My corner just kept telling me to bear down and score points."
In a women's bout, Christina Boilard of Fort Huachuca won gold. She decisioned Lilia Maxilom of Fort Huachuca 42-36.
In men's competition, David Gallegos of Fort Carson won a 36-25 decision over Marcus Dawkins of Fort Carson at 141 to advance to the Armed Forces Championships.
Christopher Downs of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, advanced to the February competition in the 178-weight class with a win over Travis Walker of Fort Still, Okla. The fight was stopped with 1:52 left in the fourth round.
Boyd Melson of Fort Carson took gold with a 33-22 decision over Trent Clark of Fort Carson.
In other bouts: John Franklin (119) of Fort Carson; Alyssa Corcoran (119) of Fort Bliss, Texas; Viridiana Lavalle (125) of Fort Myer, Va.; James Villa (132) of Fort Lewis, Wash.; and Joe Guzman (201) of Fort Carson were unopposed in advancing.
The Armed Forces Championships will include boxers from the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force.
Cory Stewart of Fort Carson defeated Colton Bettez of Fort Drum, N.Y., 15-7 to advance in the heavyweights.
"I could've done a lot better, there are things I still need to work on, but overall it was an OK fight," Stewart said.
