LOS ANGELES - A man charged with murder for allegedly triggering the collision of two commuter trains during an aborted suicide attempt appeared in court Friday, but the hearing was delayed so the suspect could undergo further medical evaluation.
Juan Manuel Alvarez, 25, who also apparently tried to slash his wrists and stab himself after the wreck, was brought to court in what appeared to be a hospital smock and had bandages on his wrists.
Standing in shackles, Alvarez's head was tipped forward and his eyes were downcast, but he looked up occasionally to glance across the courtroom.
Superior Court Commissioner Dennis Mulcahy granted a request by defense attorney Eric A. Chase to delay the arraignment. The hearing was rescheduled on Feb. 15.

New development on the "suicide." Also notice how the media and law enforcement are now laying the groundwork for the defense case:
Outside court, Chase said that there was a "lynch mob mentality" and that he wanted people to "take a step back and think about the consequences of their actions." The Glendale police chief described Alvarez earlier in the week as "deranged."
No doubt he is a mad dog. WE all know what we should do to mad dogs.
Stop wasting time and money. Strap him in and be done with it.
Do we yet know if he's a citizen?
Poor guy, I'll bet his wrist hurt after brutally murdering 11 people and injurying 200, not to mention the 250 million this will cost the city, the tax payers, transportation companies, the investigations, attorneys, loss of trains, and endless law suits.
Just take the SOB out and shoot him.
We don't know his citizenship status, at least not to my satisfaction. An article was posted on FR yesterday by some DUer saying the perp is a U.S. citizen. I have not been able to find any articles, nor have I heard from radio or television news what his status is. It's a media blackout, just as one FReeper predicted.
When a photo of his wife's restraining order against him was flashed on the screen, the nationality was listed as "Mexican." Even if he is a naturalized citizen, he was definitely born in Mexico and reportedly travelled there often.
I know where I'd put my money....
Temporary insanity. Done Deal.
I found an article saying he was a "Mexican"
hmmmm.
