A Troubled Past, a Startling Action (man who derailed LA trains)

Alvarez, a pony-tailed sometime construction worker, had been separated from his wife for several months amid allegations that he had threatened her and her family.

Carmelita Alvarez alleged that drug use had addled his mind, according to court papers she filed in support of a restraining order. She described him as a jealous man possessed by paranoid fantasies that she was cheating.

Family members and acquaintances said he used drugs heavily.

Alvarez, 25, described as a devotee of ancient Mexican rituals, was in custody late Wednesday, booked on suspicion of murder.

But he played traditional drums used in ancient Mexican Indian ceremonies.

Lopez said Alvarez was in a group that performed such ceremonies in Aztec costume — headdresses, loincloths and sandals with bells.

When Alvarez's son was born, the couple gave him the middle name Nezahualcoyotl. The name is taken from a pre-Columbian warrior-poet and a Mexican city. Alejandro Amaya, 50, who is married to Carmelita's sister and also lived in the Compton house, said Alvarez was "like a brother." Amaya said he sometimes drank beer with Alvarez but was not aware of any drug addictions.

But neighbors and Ochoa, Carmelita's brother, tell a different story. Ochoa said Alvarez was an alcoholic and used many drugs. In court papers, Carmelita alleged that Alvarez had been using drugs "a very long time," despite twice completing rehabilitation programs.

Alvarez accused her, she wrote, of setting up hidden cameras in the couple's bedroom. She said he told her he would buy a gun and take revenge on her, her family members and an imaginary lover.

Carmelita also described three incidents from Nov. 12 to Nov. 21 in which Alvarez made threats, including two menacing phone calls. He was especially hostile toward her brother, she said, who Alvarez believed introduced her to other men.

Let the canonization of this murderer by the left begin.

Well, if he had a troubled past and "played traditional drums used in ancient Mexican Indian ceremonies.", then we should give this murderer a pass.

Let the liberal news media "Sympathy for the Downtrodden™" chrorus begin!

I'd sure like to know if this guy is a citizen, legal resident, or what.

And before some people start screaming "racism", let me just say the only reason I ask is because the local news outlets have been using suspicious euphemisms on his and his family's status. I'd be suspicious if he were named "Nils Olaffsson" when I hear terms like "transient laborer", and "homeless immigrant".

Oh, and ancient Mexican rituals involve torture, human sacrifice, and cannibalism. It will be interesting to see how the media spins this into a "good thing" out of "respect for other people's cultures".

I didn't read the whole article. Did it mention whether he's on "suicide watch" where he's being held?

It's been said that suicide is the ultimate selfish act, but this guy's actions trump even that.

I think we all need to simmer down here. The guy is guilty of something like negligent manslaughter. But we hurt our credibility demanding the death penalty for the guy. He did a stupid thing that killed alot of people but he didnt intend to kill these people.

So far as we know his intention was to kill himself. So we have to presume innocence unless there emerges evidence of premeditation, or planning to derail the train.

Let's cool our jets and be rational here before we start lookin like the DU wielding pitchforks and axes.

I'm with you P-box. However, we should remember he's just a "hard working amigo from the South" who is here to do the work Americans will not due. Just another convict my tax dollars will support for at least the next 20 years.

Tell that to the relatives of the dead. Your opinion falls right into the ACLU's hands.

My thinking is 180 degrees opposite. He needs to be put in the express lane for execution. After a trial of course. I could care less about his state of mind, you kinda forfeit such considerations when you kill 12 and maim many others. I would say the same no matter where this guy was born or came from.

Michelle Malkin has been asking this question on her blog www.michellemalkin.com . We should know shortly if he is "undocumented". I'm pretty sure he is. The LA police should answer why he wasn't turned over to immigration for deportation after he served his previous sentences.

Imagine the lives that need not have been lost.

BTW I don't consider your suspicions racist and I'm of Mexican/Spanish descent, but I'm a loyal American. I don't believe any of that Aztlan garbage that La Raza (imagine if a white group called itself "The Race"!) and MALDEF spew.

As I posted on another thread, Mark Williams of KBFK Radio here in Sacramento reported Alvarez is an ILLEGAL ALIEN!

Williams has a very good credibility rep out here.

I'm presuming that the MSM isn't reporting his status observing the PC-MSM-Standard; might God forbid that such news/facts might galvanize citizen rage to actually DO something about the border problem!!
