Kids threatened over drug money

08:36 AM CST on Thursday, January 27, 2005

By TAWNELL D. HOBBS and GRETEL C. KOVACH / The Dallas Morning News

The discovery of a large sum of money by at least one South Dallas elementary student has proven to be more trouble than treasure, sparking concerns that a drug dealer may resort to violence to retrieve the cash.

Authorities and parents say the drug dealer already has threatened children at their homes to recover the money – perhaps as much as $100,000.

The money apparently was found in the area of J.J. Rhoads Learning Center, where police and school officials took extraordinary measures Wednesday to protect the students and staff.

Acceptable casualties to maintain the war on drugs. It's for the children!

Kill the drug dealer.

Problem solved.

The first mistake is letting anyone know you found it. If you don't want to keep it, call the police anonymously.

I like the way you think.

It is Texas after all. Don't they have the 'he needed killing' defense in that State?

This story is perfect proof of why guns in the home are important. A little bear spray would not hurt either... it will stop them long enough to get a good shot

Exactly. Keep it quite. However.. the story would have leaked out anyway from someone at the police department.

After all proof that the "war on drugs" is working.. don't you know?

Thanks!

Parents at the school Wednesday said the money was shared among several students, and possibly others in the neighborhood. The identity of the student – or students – who found the money was not immediately known.

Bad behaviour does have consequences. I feel bad for parents and students not involved, but not much sympathy for the students who found the money, kept it, and shared it. Stupid.

I'm willing to bet that these dealers were supposed to pay that money to someone higher up the food chain. If so, maybe he will kill them for being stupid enough to lose $100,000 in cash. That's a lot of money to lose. The young kids who found it should have told only their parents about it.I bet the two families could have used $50,000 apiece for a lot of things.

I think tv news reports said some kids were showing up at school with large sums of money and that triggered the investigation and lockdown of the school.

Well, even if they turned it over to the police they wouldn't be any better off. If no one claims the money (a likely scenario in this case), then the kids get to keep the money.

Right back where they started. Worse. With their identity known to all, including the drug dealers.

I was curious to see who they were returning the money to, but the article made no mention returning the money at all.

It is rather naive to believe that the dealer's don't know who has their money.
