(Texas, Susan) Combs plotting run for comptroller
Corpus Christi Caller-Times ^ | January 23, 2005 | Jaime Powell

Posted on 01/24/2005 10:46:23 AM PST by SwinneySwitch

Political Pulse: 01.23.05

The morning after the Texas State Society's Black Tie and Boots inaugural ball in Washington, which drew Texas politicians in droves, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs was hoarse, which she attributed to talking over the band.

Though she has not made a formal announcement, Combs said she would run for Carole Keeton Strayhorn's job as state comptroller, when Strayhorn tries to fill bigger boots, widely rumored to be Gov. Rick Perry's.

Strayhorn already has told Combs she is not running for comptroller again, so Combs' fund-raising efforts are directed at the job, she said.

"I will probably do a formal announcement in the next couple of months, but sure I am telling people I am running," Combs said.

Man, Susan announced her plans at Three Rivers Stadium four years ago yesterday, but I guess nobody was there to hear her....

Combs is a nice lady and all, but not qualified nor the best choice for Comptroller. She's never struck me as very smart.

Then again, that would put her in league with our current Comptroller

Somebody needs to get a photo of Combs and Your-Ad-Here next to each other. Think Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito in Twins.

STRAYHORN LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR ANOTHER RUN AS COMPTROLLER

Keying off a Susan Combs quote in the Caller Times
It is certainly no secret that Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn is considering a run for Governor. Saying that the Comptroller's spot is an open seat, Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs has declared that she is a candidate and has been raising money on that assumption. She has said before and recently reiterated that Strayhorn assured her that it would be an open seat.

Keying off a quote in a recent Corpus Christi Caller Times to that effect, Strayhorn spokesman Mark Sanders today said, "The people of Texas are certainly asking her (Strayhorn) to run for Governor and she is listening. But the Comptroller never told Commissioner Combs she is not running for Comptroller again. And Commissioner Combs knows it."

And in the same league as Kay Bailey, though Kay makes Susan look like a towering intellect.

What is it about us here in Texas that we persistently elect the dumbest of our women to office?

You're right that Kay's no genius. Susan trails her and Rylander-Strayhorn-McClellan falls even further behind that. Kay's also an Einstein compared to Governor Hairspray. Patterson and Dewhurst, though he puts on the folksy charade sometimes, are probably the most intelligent ones we've got.
