BOSTON — The revelation last week that a laboratory slip-up led three Boston University scientists to become infected with tularemia, a flulike disease sometimes referred to as "rabbit fever," has fueled criticism of a plan to build a state-of-the-art research lab to study some of the world's most lethal germs in Boston's South End.

For the record the doctor heading the tuleremia project, Peter Rice, had done the same thing to himself and 2 of his staff in the mid 80's with Shigella, a level 2 bioagent.

BU still had him working with dangerous stuff.

With this kind of track record maybe they should put this someplace AWAY from population centers?

I don't know about bio-agents, but that's fairly standard in industry, in my experience.

Joe is put in charge of a major project involving satellite sensor systems. In no time at all, the project collapses and the parent firm loses $100 million. Upper management decides to re-group and explore the possibilties of optic sensors. Who will run the project? Well, Joe has experience with big-ticket sensing systems, and he knows better than anyone what can go wrong ... we'll put him in charge.

Yes, probably the research should be done far away from population centers.

Well, I'd keep Dr. Rice away from the lethal stuff.

As more than one local wag has put it: If one more homosexual moves to the South End it'll have to be renamed the Rear End. The place is over run with 'em

Come to think of it, if they can't even dig a proper tunnel without it leaking line a seive, how the heck are they gonna build a center where even a minute leak spells death and disaster?
