FireFox continues gains against IE

From the beginning of December through mid-January, 4.78 percent of Internet surfers studied by online measurement company WebSideStory used the Mozilla Foundation's FireFox browser, a gain of 0.88 percentage points. At the same time, IE usage declined 0.7 percent to 92.7 percent, the firm reported. WebSideStory said IE use has declined from 96.7 percent since June.

I have IE, Firefox, Netscape, and Opera, but Firefox is the only one I use regularly. I love it!

Didn't Microsoft leak that they'll stop supporting IE in the near future?
I like Firefox better than IE, but I like Maxthon too. It's based on IE, and there are some IE plug-ins that I like that Maxthon uses too.

How does this compare to IE. Curious. I would switch to anything if it gave me more security without losing features and ease of use.

I use both Mozilla and IE. Mozilla refuses to open certain web pages. I reinstalled and still have the same problem.

I have Firefox and the Avant Browser which is IE with more bells and whistles. I prefer Avant over Firefox. I tried Maxthon but could not get it to work properly. Firefox I believe is the securest of the various browsers I have tried.

I found Firefox to be sloooow, and I have a broadband connection.

I prefer Opera, myself.

However, the growing use of Firefox means that the hackers will start looking for security holes in it.

Stop supporting IE? I think you heard wrong.

The word from Microsoft is that IE6 SP2 is the final version of IE, and from now on, new versions of IE will come with each new operating system. If you want IE7, you'll have to shell out for Longhorn, the codename for Microsoft's next OS.

Microsoft is saying that if you want new IE features, there are third parties using IE's plugin system to code them, and you can download those.

I think rendering is slower on Firefox than IE, but my IE is so bogged down by Spybot warnings that I use Firefox exclusively for eBay browsing. I prefer IE for Freerepublic. Scrolling is smoother on my PC.

Of course. The difference is that Firefox is locked down pretty well. When a new house is built, it's inevitable that thieves will case it looking for ways in. Firefox is the house with its doors and windows locked, and an alarm system set up.

There is only one way to find out for yourself, download Firefox, install it, and try it. Its free. If you like it, there it is. If you don't, hit the uninstall button. There are also other browsers besides Firefox or IE. Try them.

I have Mozilla. It blocks almost all popups, for one thing. I won't use IE except if firefox is really slow.

Firefox has problems with some scripting on some web pages.

Some web pages are written specifically to use IE's built-in features. Firefox has trouble with such web pages.

Otherwise, Firefox is pretty good, and you can customize it with your choice of many 'extensions'. The tabbed browser extension is essential for FR. (I have been using another tabbed, IE-based browser for 2+ years. I could FR without a tabbed browser.)

I go back and forth between Firefox and the other tabbed browser. I do keep IE for those certain pages that won't load in other browsers.

It compares favorably in every single department EXCEPT for proprietary Microsoft technologies (e.g. ActiveX). All the MS techs are security nightmares, anyway.

My uncle used to use IE and was inundated with hijacks and browser spam, to the point where he repeatedly reformmated his entire machine in an attempt to get rid of them. I would get called an average of twice a week to help. This went on for most of a year before I finally forcibly installed Firefox, gave him a 2-minute tutorial, and removed all obvious references to IE.

He has not had a single security-related problem since. Now when he calls me for help (much less frequently), it is because he is learning new things, not struggling to keep from being spammed by porn ads.
