MILWAUKEE - A man trying to rob a pet store became the star of a security video after two clerks triggered an alarm that notified police and also locked the front door of the establishment so he couldn't get out.
Police said the man, described as in his 20s and wearing a hooded black parka, walked into Marine Land Pets this week and demanded money.
He showed one of the two clerks a gun, but she thought it was a toy, police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said Thursday. The clerks triggered a silent alarm and an electric alarm that locks the doors of the store.
When the man tried to get out the door, he couldn't.
He can be heard on the tape demanding that the workers open the door, only to hear them say, "We can't."
Then he asks again, "Open the door ma'am. Please open the door."
He finally found his way out a back door and fled.
Clerks Crystal and Wendy York said their father was in security.
"We've seen all sorts of guns, and my sister thought it was a fake, and I trust her," said Crystal York.
But Schwartz said that in similar situations, it shouldn't be assumed that a gun is fake.
Police were looking for the man.
Perhaps he should think about a career in electronics?
I often thought it would be great to design a bank with a long corridor on the entrance/exit with two set of doors on either end.
When he robs the bank a silent alarm locks the outside door (so no one else can enter)
A second lock on the inside door closes after he is in the corridor, locking him in the box- then the tellers just point and laugh until the police come.
(Ok, Ok there would have to be an override to unlock if someone got stuck in there with him)
Silliest robbery story I've run across was on grand jury duty....man broke into a bank, removed a few ceiling tiles and tried to crawl through the ceiling to the vault, thinking the vault had no ceiling and that he was going to be able to drop right onto a pile of money
At the very least he was polite. He said ma'am.
Would-be robber caged in pet store
Too bad one of the pets wasn't a 13' python. He could have had a pressing experience.
