Problems Found With '04 Exit Polls

NEW YORK — Two firms that conducted Election Day exit polls for major news organizations reported Wednesday that they found a number of problems with the way the polls were carried out last year, resulting in estimates that overstated John Kerry's share of the vote.

Edison Media Research (search) and Mitofsky International (search) found that the Democratic challenger's supporters were more likely than President Bush's supporters to participate in exit polls interviews. They also found that more errors occurred in exit polls conducted by younger interviewers, and about half of the interviewers were 34 or under.

The polling firms laid out their findings to the consortium of news organizations, known as the National Election Pool. See the results of the study by clicking here (pdf).

The news organizations — ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News and The Associated Press — formed the consortium to get exit polling data for the 2004 election after a previous group known as the Voter News Service was disbanded.

In November 2000, flawed information from VNS twice led television networks to incorrectly declare a winner in the presidential race in Florida, the state that proved to be key to the outcome. And in the 2002 election, VNS was unable to provide its members and other clients with results from exit poll surveys.

The DUmmies made efforts to intentionally go out of their way to get polled and skew the results for Kerry, then the DUmmies wonder why the polls were skewed and attributed it to a bunch of whacked out conspiracy theories. God bless them.

With mall pollsters you some times get paid to answer their stupid questions.

Is this one of those "DUh" moments?

Wasn't intending the DUh to be aimed at you - Comment was aimed at the dopes conducting the polling and ensuing post-election analysis.

Sorry if it came across as pointed in your direction.

Looked at the headline and had to wonder to myself what took them so long to figure it out.

I was emailed about 3:30 by a friend that the exit polling was dead wrong and not to panic with the reports from the news organizations. Spent the rest of the afternoon getting ready for our Victory 2004 Party for our County and telling everyone I knew that I had it on good authority that the Exit Polls were wrong.

There is no way that this should be allowed to happen again with reporting exit polls before polls have closed. Time to write a law doing away with Exit Polling in Presidential elections IMO.

This can't be true. The exit polls proved conclusively that there was only a 1 in 250,000,000 statistical chance that Bush really won.

well pretty much if they dont report the exit polls until the polls have closed, there is no reason for them :)

What gets me is that in all of the years prior to 2000, the exit polls were accurate. 'Wha happened?

Very deliberately left unsaid here - the fact that these 2 polling firms were giving the media what they wanted; data that showed Kerry blowing out Bush, so they could supress Republican turnout by convincing Republican voters that the race was all over, and their votes didn't matter. The same stunt they pulled with Panhandle voters in Florida in 2000, except this time they decided to take their act nation wide.

Bingo! The polling outfits also tend to forget that in a lot of states with early voting they cannot get an accurate count but then accuracy and polling firms do not seem to fit in the same sentence.

In lots of polling places, the exit pollsters were set up right next to the Kerry/Edwards/MoveOn tables. What Republican in their right mind wanted to deal with those Bozos?

Methinks that the media decided that they had to be more open in steering public opinion since we sheep were no longer willing to be herded by them in their subtle way. They got soft during the Horndog administration- we ran a Humpty Dumpty against him in '96, and Dubya was a special education student who got lucky and got the nomination in 2000. Thank God they don't learn!!!
