The "alimentary canal" line is a joke line that I remembered. Neither Faulkner nor Hemingway would have had anything to do with that line. And I agree that Iowa's style in this one is mostly Conrad, though he can disabuse me if I'm wrong.

Until G.W, silly. That's why liberals don't get why Iowa slipped out of their grasp.

"My entree fork toyed with the competently-prepared lamb shank in merlot reduction, as I pondered the even more ironic irony that this ironic mission would take me to regions that were reportedly unfamiliar with irony."

LOL!

Terrific!

I can only imagine the fear coursing through the veins of these intrepid explorers...

So when does he meet Col. Kilgore and the 1st of the 9th?

After crossing the muddy mud-colored mud of the Missouri river we had finally arrived in Omaha, the last stop before our maps became strictly conjectural. From here on out, until we reached Austin, we would have to rely our wits and our training in journalism to navigate through hostile red enclaves.

An echo of Kipling, as well. I can't wait for the next installment. This is achingly, sidesplittingly funny. Will Dionne awake and find the primitive chords of "In the Garden" echoing, breaking into his consciousness, along with images of the red woman in boot cut jeans flashing a knowing "have you been saved?" look.....the horror.

Outstanding! Your satire is reminiscent of the 1970’s Poon.
