Unless you like prying off surface mount chips and resoldering 'updates'!

My indian name is 'solders with fists.' I can solder all the pins of an IC together as one common lead, that's about it.

" If they were giving them away for free, I wouldn't take one."

Didn't they do that with the 'flavor Macs' when they first promo'd them?

It doesn't come with the monitor. You buy a monitor or use your old one. The assumption is this new Mac is for people thinking of "switching" from a PC so they already have a monitor, etc. which they can use with it. That's why it's so cheap.

Well, you can't actually do anything with the cute box, but you can pat yourself on the back over all the money you saved.

Slow down. Don't criticze people for advocating a computer you obviously don't know anything about.

The Mac Mini does not have a screen.
It is expandable via USB2, FireWire, Ethernet, WiFi and BlueTooth.
It doesn't waste space on legacy ports.
It is compact, efficient, and quiet.

Go read http://www.apple.com/macmini/ before you complain more.

You're right.

I assumed 'portable' not 'mini'.

Now I do!

3. They previously purchased a Mac, which effectively turned into a doorstop right after they took it out of the box.

I have a 25Mhz PowerPC Performa. Frankly, it was probably a doorstop before I took it out of the box. That machine made me think that we'd never buy another Mac again.

Then they came out with the iMac and iBook and we've bought two of each since. Yes, Apple made a lot of mistakes but I refuse to punish myself and not use a good machine over a silly grudge over mistakes Apple made almost a decade ago now.

They're down to $500 now. That's funny, I paid $300 for my last Dell (2004). I guess I'll have to wait a while longer. Macs are still 66% more expensive than PCs.

I think the point being made that "a paperback-sized computer you can throw in your backpack" implies that it might be a portable. It might be highly portable, but it is not a self-contained portable like, say a Thinkpad.

Mac Fanatics scare almost as much as liberal Democrats.

Some of the Mac-attitude reminds me of the new non-smoker or the crusading vegetarian-- "It's right for me and YOU TOO!"

Nonsense! The only Mac-attitude is a backlash to PC users constantly looking for reasons to insult us for our choice of computer.

If we were talking about motorcycles instead of computers, Mac users would be the "Harley" riders, and the critics would be getting their little weenie asses kicked for offering unsolicited opinions.

Whatever is fashionable for the masses becomes unfashionable for the minority.

I'm a Mac user but these guys screw things up for the rest of us -- i.e when corporate decision makers ponder what computers to buy.

And using a Mac does not make you cool or superior.

I've been using PCs since the old 286 days. I immersed myself in every aspect that I could to keep these machines running as well as possible. Amongst friends and family, I became the "go-to guy" on DOS, then Windows machines.

25 months ago the frustration level with our Pentium Compaq machine became so great that I threw up my hands, collected the wife, the credit card, and headed to the Mac store.

I was less than pleased to do this for a few reasons:

1. I had invested so much time on the PC that learning even 50% more to be an advanced Mac user was a thought almost too much to bear.

2. The fear of not being being compatible with 90%+ of the world's computers was worrisome.

3. Those Apple machines were expensive.

The result:

-The Mac is so easy to use, I have since FORGOTTEN 50% of what I've learned about computers.
-There isn't any computer with which I have compatibility issues.
-A couple months went by, the credit card charges were paid off and forgotten.

Further, in the last two years there have been a grand total of ZERO crashes on the (TWO) machine(s). Every device that I have plugged into it has worked flawlessly and simply. I have no viruses (virii?). I have no spyware. There isn't anything that I can't do on the Mac that I can on a PC, but I can do much more than a PC will allow.

I suggested in a PC help thread here on FR that the user should switch to Mac. One Freeper jumped into my stuff suggesting that switching from "a Ford" to "a Chevy" was unhelpful, useless and cynical. My retort, should I have posted it, would have been that Chevys and Fords do indeed break down at similar intervals. The dirty truth is that PCs have serious, maddingly and unacceptably high failure rates and that the Mac is a true alternative. In other words, the Ford-to-Chevy and Apple-to-PC comparison is worthless.

In the past, I have been excited to get a new computer or OS, but that excitement usually wore off in a few weeks. Two years later I am STILL excited about what my Mac can do. As a footnote, I am not an Apple zealot, just a very satified customer.

Do yourself a HUGH favor and check out the new $499 Macs. You can still use your old keyboard, mouse, display and printer. All that you lose is the Advil.

All this PC vs. Mac stuff is silly. Mac users aren't "gay". PC users aren't "stupid". I happen to be a Mac user at home but have to use PCs at work. Personally, I prefer my Mac. But I understand people using PCs either because they like them, are more accustomed to them, because they're cheaper or because so many games are made for them. It doesn't really bother me. I see no need to insult PC users and I don't think there's any need to insult Mac users.

I do have to say, though, that my PC at work causes me endless frustrations that my Mac doesn't, even though my Mac at home has had many peripherals attached, software added, internals expanded, etc. My work PC, which has had nothing done to it, is constantly doing strange things even though we have all up-to-date virus software, etc. Because of my experience with them at work I would never buy a PC for home use. I think it's mostly a function of PCs holding such a large portion of the market so most viruses and hacks are created for the PC, coupled with the fact that Mac's OS X is, I believe, a much more stable OS than Windows. But that's just me. I'm not gonna denigrate someone else's choice.

I've got MS Office on my Macs so I have nothing, per say, against Bill Gates or Microsoft. Plenty of Macs have MS Office on them. I don't think it helps to make this a battle of Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs when it's a matter of which computer better fits a user's needs.
