George Soros Group Raises the Stakes in Battle with US Neo-Cons (a fool and his money..)
Financial Times of London ^ | 1/12/04 | James Harding

Posted on 01/13/2005 7:24:14 AM PST by gopwinsin04

A group of billionaire philanthropists are to donate tens of millions more dollars to delevelop progressive political ideas in the US to counter the conservative ascdenancy.

George Soros, who made his fortune in the hedge fund industry, Herb and Marion Sandler, the California couple who own a multi billion dollar savings and loan business, and Peter Lewis the chairman of an Ohio insurance company, donated more than $63 million dollars in the 2004 election cycle to organizations seeking to defeat President George W. Bush.

At a meeting in San Francisco last month, the left leaning billionaires agreed to commit an even larger sum over a longer period to build institutions that foster progressive ideas and people.

Far from being disillusioned by the defeat of Sen. John Kerry, the billionaires have resolved to invest further in the intellectual future of the left.

Their committment to provide new money comes amid criticism of the efforts of high profile donors such as Mr. Soros to sway US politics.

The intention is to provide the left with organizations in Washington that match the heft of right wing think tanks such as the Heritage Foundation and American Enterprise Institute. At a state level, the aim is to build a 'deeper progressive bench.'

Indymedia.org team in merger talks with CBS/Viacom
George Soros, CEO of Indymedia.org ltd has begun merger talks with the CBS/Viacom News Network to help bring together the Vibrant Staff of the Independant News Network with the resources and Global Consumer Reach of the CBS news network. This follows a meeting of the IMC Board of Directors and key Indymedia shareholders where it was decided that Indymedia needed to branch out from its traditional Liberal readership demographic to encompass more mainstream news interests and readerships....

Soros bios always had that vague reference to the international investment fund he founded in 1956.

Found the following in a search last night.  Seems that the fund was set up by Arnhold & S Bleichroeder and Soros was the 'overseer".

The man who broke the bank

Soros Bio (financial origins)

George Soros - His Life   early education & financial info (Bibliography)

The Watershed Events of 2000 - The Soros Saga   (Begins Page 7) media.wiley.com  financial info

F. M. Mayer in New York    (1956-1959)  arbitrageur

Wertheim & Co.    (1959-1963)

Arnhold & S Bleichroeder LLC   (1963-1973)

Two offshore funds Soros persuaded Arnhold & S Bleichroeder to set up and let him oversee them:

First Eagle Funds    (1967)

Double Eagle Hedge Fund   (1969)  Became the Soros Fund  (1973) then renamed the Quantum Fund  (1979)

Rogers teams with Soros   (1970)

Soros Fund Management   (1973)

Rogers leaves firm (1980)

Nice researching. Thanks for the links.

Any legal action against Arnhold & S Bleichroeder?

Could be the reason why Soros kept his involvement quiet.

Any legal action against Arnhold & S Bleichroeder? Could be the reason why Soros kept his involvement quiet.

====================================================

BACKGROUND: Philip Services Corporation (Philip), a Canadian metal processing company, is alleged to have perpetrated a massive fraud upon its shareholders, the vast majority of whom are United States investors. After Philip stock prices plummeted and extensive securities fraud litigation was commenced in different states and in Canada, the Judicial Panel on Multi-District Litigation transferred all of the American suits -- at Philip's request and over the objections of several plaintiffs -- to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (Mukasey, J.)

Metals trading? That's Marc Rich's milieu. Could be Soros' connection with Rich.

Good on the legal action!  Thanks!

My thought was that he didn't look like such a 'big dog' because he was employed by others instead of doing his own thing for so many years.

The following is why the actions of these characters are so difficult to follow.  They're interwoven with others and involved everywhere (just like my files!).

These people are all over the map!  It's like herding cats.

While I was gathering links I'd saved that fit into the 'media' category, I found a couple of articles that have more significance now than they did when I saved them.  I'm posting here before they get lost in the shuffle.

The Strange Case of Russia,Big Oil and the CIA  (Soros/Berger) Washington Post  1-9-00

SOUTHEAST EUROPE EQUITY FUND LAUNCHED  (Soros/Berger)  United States Mission to the European Union   7-26-00

Good grief! Sandy Berger and Soros and SECRET files? Someone should compile all of this and write a book!

And someone should send THIS info to the prosecutor who has Sandy under investigation/indictment,right now,for purloining and destroying some of those purloined documents.

Try to get your hands on A. Craig Copetas' book about Marc Rich---who was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list as the biggest tax cheat in US history, who renounced his American citizenship to evade prosecution.....then got Clinton to pardon him.

A. Craig Copetas' first version was Metal Men: Marc Rich and the 10-Billion-Dollar Scam. New York: Harper & Row (Perennial Library), 1986.

After the pardon, it was re-released as Metal Men: How Marc Rich Defrauded the Country, Evaded the Law, and Became the World's Most Sought-After Corporate Criminal (2001)

Surely the authorities were aware of both transactions since government agencies were involved. Of course, we have to remember who was in charge then.

I'm going back to my old tagline.......the 'stuff' just keeps turning up.

Yea, by their own admittance. Yet the media doesn't find this fact relevant and neglects to tell us.

Ever wonder why these people who made billions under capitalism want to advance socialism?

The core of leftist politics is always envy. In the case of the rich, they are trying to deflect it. Being the constant target of anger and resentment is not enjoyable. By donating small tokens of their wealth and by supporting tax increases on high income workers, not themselves, they can reduce the Bolshevik threat, and their personal guilt, all the while keeping their wealth.

They have no intention of "giving away" anything.
