A Texas school finance overhaul plan unveiled Wednesday would cut property taxes by one-third and raise the salaries of teachers.
The measure would add $6.7 billion for public schools. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst announced the plan on the second day of the legislative session, saying the measure has the support of all 31 state senators.
The plan is touted as closing loopholes in the state franchise tax, which is the state's main business tax -- forcing all businesses except sole proprietors to pay a tax.
Other money for schools would be generated from a combination of a higher sales, motor vehicle, cigarette and alcohol taxes.
Details still need to be worked out.
The plan, which now makes its way through the Legislature, also includes a statewide property tax, which ultimately would have to be approved by voters.

I wouldn't mind seeing my property taxes reduced 1/3 here in Austin. Hopefully, the resolution of this issue with the new leg. won't end abruptly with the rats fleeing the state to OK again.

If those 'Rats show up in my neck of Oklahoma, I fire a warning shot, then they got about three seconds. LOL
Much appreciated! Ardmore was their last "vacation" spot.
I get taxed by the following:
Harris County, Harris County Flood Control Dist, Harris County Dept. of Education , Port of Houston Authority , Harris County Hospital District , N Harris Montgomery Comm College, Emergency Service Dist, Emergency Service Dist #11
There are so many people voting to raise my taxes that I can't hold anyone accountable. ,If it were a State wide tax at least I could vote against my State Rep, Senator and the Governor.
Hehe...I think you could probably just yell 'boo' at 'em and scare them plenty.
I know of an easier way of raising the money and the salaries of GOOD teachers ...
1. fire all bad teachers
2. fire all administrators other than one principal/VP per school
3. fire all lawyers (matches work best here)
4. fire all activist judges (ditto above)
5. cut all politician salaries in half and stop all retirement benefits (politics was not supposed to be a career)
Grab hold of your wallets and pocketbooks. The devil is in the details. Bigtime. Higher teacher salaries, $6.7 billion more for schools and a third less property tax burden=huge tax increases elsewhere.
Franchise Tax=Corporate Income Tax
Sales Tax
