It sounds like he would be confirmed with relative ease, but he seems too wishy-washy in a lot of areas.

Judge Michael McConnell, a jurist with bipartisan appeal...

Read, "a judge who wouldn't touch Roe with a ten foot pole".

I sure hope he rules McCain-Feingold unconstitutional.

"a jurist with bipartisan appeal"

I don't like the sounds of that. Anything that appeals to 'rats turns my stomach.

"He could be a very appealing consensus candidate"

If President Bush does not nominate someone who makes the Liberals stand up and scream, I will be very disappointed. Make them go through hell, researching every article, letter, note, e-mail whatever in search of something. Make them spend hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions to fight a minority Judge, because while in Law School he/she attended a speech in support of overturning Roe V Wade.

Let them make fools of themselves, while we reap the benefit.

Mitch is cool. I'd love to have him on the Bench.

He'd make a good replacement for Stevens.

Years ago when Dingbat Hatch was mentioned as a possible candidate, I recall some concerns that he could not be considered since he had voted for Supreme Court pay raises. Therefore, he was disqualified for consideration. If this is accurate, would that not also apply to McConnell?, Or,is my memory going bad on me?

Before everyone goes ape over this, wait and see who the President nominates. The media has been floating around every name from Alberto Gonzales to promoting O'Connor to Chief Justice and naming someone else to fill her seat.

Right now it is all speculation and gives the media something to write about on slow news days.

For Chief Justice, Antion Scalia is the most likely to be nominated. The fact that Senate 'Rat Leader Harry Reid praised Scalia bids well for his chances. As for succeeding Scalia, Appeals Justice Michae Luttig is the most likely nominee.

The left has been signalling madly about what judges it may accept as S Ct nominees, and whom they would Bork. McConnell would make a fine Justice, but not as a replacement for the Chief. I prefer Luttig in this slot.
