HELICOPTER gunships blasted Muslim rebel positions in the southern Philippines today after guerillas attacked an army outpost violating a two-year-old ceasefire.
Fighting broke out late yesterday when about 100 guerillas of the Muslim separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) attacked soldiers on the outskirts of Mamasapano town in central Mindanao.
They used mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles, spokesmen for the military and MILF said.
Fighting continued throughout the night and into today and two MG520 helicopters were called in to attack MILF positions. Extra troops were also deployed to prevent the rebels from overrunning the outpost, military spokesman Colonel Franklin del Prado said.
Two soldiers were wounded in the fighting, the colonel said, adding that retreating rebels were seen dragging at least five wounded or dead comrades behind them.

We have had SF units on the ground in the Southern P.I., but the heavy lifting is being done by the locals from what I've read.
The MG520 "Defender" is the export variant of the AH-6 Littlebird. It can be fitted with guns, rockets, or TOW missiles.

My brother was a chopper pilot in Nam. He mentioned the Loach. He said that it reminded him of a gnat, shaped like a sperm cell. He said that that sircraft could fly circles around his chopper.. I think he flew an AH58, but his aircraft was not designed for combat, so I may be wrong.
My brother and his crew took enemy fire in evacs.
He does NOT like to talk about his combat experiences in Nam. His wife tells us that he still has nightmares... thirty-four years later.
I have never pressed him even though we have been brothers for 54 years. (He used to beat the crap out of me when we were teen-agers).
Today, he is running his own heliport construction business, building heliports all over the world.

My brother flew (I think an AH58) in 1970-71. He referred to this (as shown) shaped aircraft as a bird that looked like a sperm-cell, and could maneauver like a gnat, fast, and EXTREMELY maneuravable. Am I on target?
