Why is pornography becoming so pervasive? Is something in our society driving men (I don't think women buy a lot of the stuff)to go to consuming pornography?

Feminism. Men want women, not things trying to become men.

"Why is pornography becoming so pervasive?"

Short answer, Because seeing young attractive females in the buff is pleasing to mens eyes. Always has been always will be.

It is an idolatry of perversion, a cult that is just one part of the neo-pagan new age religion that needs to expand its congregation...

I don't think women buy a lot of the stuff

According to Family Safe Media, 28% of viewers of Internet porn are female.

I recall a couple of parties I attended in high school and college, shortly after the VCR appeared, where classics like "Deep Throat" and "The Devil in Miss Jones were shown. The girls at the party were riveted to the TV screen, I mean totally fascinated.

I suspect that if they can do so in a socially accepted way, either by themselves on the Internet, or in a large crowd at a party, many women enjoy looking at porn. It's the adult bookstores and sticky-floored "art" cinemas that turn them off, as it leads to unwanted advances from men that cannot be laughed off casually or ignored like they can at a party.

Internet availability + perceived anonimity = porn explosion

I think it's more of a "why not?" thing. Nobody cares so what's the big deal. It's not like it's immoral to think of women as objects of lust or anything. And it's not as if sex has a higher purpose than personal pleasure.

Shalom.
