Swamp gas. Or maybe sunlight reflected off the wing feathers of migrating geese (both actual explanations given in the past by officials).

Space junk, natural or manmade, likely.

The "starting a fire" is a tipoff that either it's NOT a meteorite or space junk, or the story is bogus.
