"El Charcote," a cattle ranch owned by the British Vestey Group, is to be seized on Saturday "with state machinery, to settle a first group of men participating in the Mission Land and Mission Free Men," said Alexis Ortiz, solicitor general of rich farmland Cojedes State.
After a meeting at the Executive Vice President's Office, he explained that the move is to be supported by "the National Armed Force and local police corps, as well as officials from Governor Johnny Yánez Rangel's Office."

They will be starving within a year...
Kind of dumb, when they have bank accounts in the US and Europe.
Too bad Maggie isn't around any more. Blair won't say a word.
The New Mugabe-ism. The first victims will be foreign-owned, but that of course is only the beginning. I suppose the UNWFP had better start gearing up for Venezuelan famine in about two years.

Chavez is moving right along there, isn't he? With the support of his buddy Fidel and his new friend, Zapatero (Spain).
I saw this.
Another thing I've been following is his move to pack the Supreme Court. He already has a hand-picked Supreme Court, but they aren't servile enough for him, so he is going to add another dozen hand-picked judges to make sure they do his will.
Previously he has resorted to threatening his Court with arrest to enforce his will, but I guess thats not good enough.
They would never dare such a thing if Maggie were still running things at 10 Downing Street. We'll see if Tony has any backbone left. They ought to have British commandoes parachuting in there with full air support as they did in the Falklands.
Do the Brits still have military assets in the Falklands?
How terribly sad.
Damn Right they do!
Right you are---and soon Dr. Rummel's "democide" website will have new statistics on another group of citizens of a socialist country slaughtered by their own government "for their own good".
Maybe the UN will help out.../sarc/
Will the last investor to leave Venz please turn out the lights ?
The article gives little detail into the case apart from the fact that 3,500 hectares of the estate are owned by the state.
Without any actual facts involved it is a bit early to compare it with Mugabe. After all some of the land (but not all) is owned by the state. This seems to be more like an isolated incident.
In any case, the Venezuelan government should either pay the owners fair value for this expropriation or be held accountable for as long as it takes to be paid (IE Cuba).
I feel this might be an isolated case that could have been due to some financial wrangling between the two sides.
But without the facts I guess I would reserve judgement.
I would be interested to see if any further expropriations take place.
Chavez is not as low in my opinions as other people on this board but I am not his supporter either.
There is private property or there is not. Looks like in Chavez's case, its up to him (no rule of law).
Not if they had a court order.
Maybe this has been going throught the courts for years.
