By FERMIN LEAL The Orange County Register

COSTA MESA – A group of parents and parishioners at St. John the Baptist School has accused the Diocese of Orange of defying church doctrine after officials allowed the children of a gay couple to enroll at the Catholic school.

The group of about three dozen is demanding the church adopt a policy that all parents must sign a letter in which they agree to abide by Catholic principles, and all teachers should tell students that same-sex marriages and adoptions by gay parents do not adhere to Catholic beliefs and have been condemned by Pope John Paul II.

"The group of about three dozen is demanding the church adopt a policy that all parents must sign a letter in which they agree to abide by Catholic principles"

Divorcees, parents who had their kids out of wedlock, Jews, and others who just want their kids to get a great education in a safe environment need not apply?

Any of these 3 dozen use birth control? If so, their kids should be expelled. After all, the parents aren't following "Catholic Principles."

This is a bit self-righteous of the parents. I am absolutely sure that they do not strictly adhere to every catholic principal. I thought Christianity and in turn Catholicism taught judge not lest ye be judged. All of the parents that protest the kids from being enrolled have sinned themselves, and are in no place to judge the "parents" of these kids. The kids are not gay. They are in Kindergarten. These sort of self-righteous rants by people are exhausting to listen to.

That is the school's perogative, and I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with educating children within the context of shared spiritual values (whether they be Christian, Bhuddist or whatever). But having said that, I personally have a problem with punishing children for the sins of their parents.

The child should be allowed to attend the Catholic school. Why should a child suffer because of his/her home life. It's not the kids fault that the parents are gay, and who cares anyway. As long as the parents know that their lifestyle stays out of the school, I see no reason to deprive the kid of a Catholic education. Besides, has anyone out there been in a Catholic school lately? It's not like when we went there years ago. No more nuns beating up on you for peeing your pants because you couldn't hold it for the time they insisted you go. Instead, now you get practically no Catholic doctrine because the schools are too busy being liberal and politically correct.

I don't see what the good is in turning these kids away because they're burdened with perverted parents. At least in a Catholic school they'll hear that being queer is not acceptable. I can't see why their parents are sending them there, though, except to begin some sort of legal action when Church doctrine is discussed pointing out that being homosexual is an abomination. Just like the Rosa Parks thing, where she was directed by the NAACP to NOT go to the back of the bus so they could sue. The whole thing was staged.

I don't think it is bad, the children need to learn that homosexuality is a sin somewhere. they should be accepted into the school.

Exactly. The kids are not gay, so why shouldn't the school allow them?

Divorcees, parents who had their kids out of wedlock, Jews

The Church has never held children responsible for what their parents did or did not do (divorce, out-of-wedlock)as for Jews, we had many Jewish kids at my Catholic university.

You can't sign up for a Catholic school and then expect the school not to be Catholic. It's a package deal.

The School should listen to what the majority of the parents want,or the parents will find another option- and Catholic schools should follow the teachings of their religion.

My children do not attend Catholic schools- even thou they are great schools- because we are not Catholic. We also do not attend Temple- because we are not Jewish.

Bottom line.

I told my wife the same thing yesterday - the school reserves the right to teach Biblical Principals andif it happens to mention that the "parents" are living in sin and considered abominations in the eyes of God, then too bad if they don't like it. It gives the kids a far better chance.

I remember about ten years ago, a Sacred Heart school in NYC wouldn't let kids of divorced parents into their schools. Times have changed.

"That is the school's perogative"

I agree, but these parents are looking to target something using a broad sword so big they'll end up cutting off their own noses.

"I personally have a problem with punishing children for the sins of their parents."

I agree with this as well. These kids don't understand what's going on, and it's completely unfair for them to be thrust into the middle of a big fight. That said, it's really no different than two immature parents who get divorced and then use the kids like rocks to beat each other over the head.

I really doubt these parents abide by all the Catholic regulations.
The Gay parents have just as much right to send their children to Catholic School as the next person. Its an education that is far superior to the public schools...every child should be allowed this opportunity no matter who their parents are.

"I can't see why their parents are sending them there"

I'm hoping, for the sake of those kids, that it's because they want them to get a great education in a safe environment. I'd suspect they were just looking to pick a fight, but I'll still hope otherwise.
